Matt as you were the commentator could you update me who the black central midfielder was first half and the left back first half. Cruise will be on his bike if the left back signs. If I was Hargreaves I'd be pretty pleased with myself.

Rice played well and the new lad did ok but looked a bit wonky around the legs can't explain it but hope he does ok.

The central midfielder was Courtney Richards and the left back was Levi Ives.

quite enjoyed that; Cruise wasn't quick enough.Impressed by Young. Just to correct something...Pearce(captain) wasn't carried off; he walked off limping. He & Downsey both had good, dependable games. Hope he's ok .

It was nice to see a fullback knock good attacking passes. Ives and Courtney Richards made Harding look out of touch as we were passing quickly. There was me thinking are we going to be ok, why was I worrying. The team looked organised and that is hard in a friendly when players are on and off the pitch. Richards has good balance and control. Thought the centre half played well as well can't think of his name but since he was here last time he has got stronger.

For those asking, Yeovil's second was an out of position Tom Cruise leaving half the pitch for a Yeovil winder to be fed a long ball down the right, which he gobbled up. The call of "hold it" from the advancing striker was obvious even to my half deaf mother stood with me at the back of the Pop side, so I bloody well know all the players heard it. At the time, the striker was only just over the halfway line, but the winger and the ball were already in the box. In this situation, all the winger wants is time, nothing else, so what did McDonald do? Stood with his thumb up his arse, that's what! Instead of closing the bloke down and forcing him to play for a corner, he just stood there with this stupid look on his stupid, massive face, allowing the geezer to pick pout a cross for the striker who took so long to get forward I genuinely thought that the full time whistle might go before he made up the ground. No need in the world to have conceded that goal. Friendly or not it was absolutely dreadful.

Still, a generally good performance. A lull in the middle once all the subs had been made, and it's quite obvious that there is a vast difference in quality between our best 14 or so players and the rest, but a good hour and a half's entertainment and a decent run out for the lads.

I'd like to see our best XI start against Walsall to see how they get on. Ask their manager to ask their players to give it some real effort for the first half at least and really see where we are. For me, the line up would be:

Either keeper

Tongue - Pearce - Downer - Ives (Ives is a weak link here. Not a bad player, just not a left back and not ready for the first team)

Cameron or Ajala (Ajala potentially a better player, he's really, really good) - Young - Richards - Briscoe

Bowman - Yeoman

That midfield, with either or both of Cameron and Ajala (if both, drop Yeoman and play a really wide 4-5-1) stands to be the best in the division. There simply isn't a weak link in there. Young's passing is exceptional. The temptation to do the wrong thing with the assist for the Cameron goal must have been enormous, but he played it perfectly). Richards is a lovely player and won't be out muscled either. Briscoe could well regain his crown as Conference player of the year. He's got pace, tricks, a cool head and he's a big lad to boot.

Pearce looked too good for Yeovil, let alone Torquay. Downer looked similarly untroubled. The weaknesses are down the flanks, although thankfully Yeovil didn't really pick up on that.

Still need a finisher though, that's what we're missing.

Thanks for report on the game for those of us who couldn't be there. I think you're getting carried away with the 'best in the division' on the basis of one friendly match !! I seem to remember we were all hyped up last season after the friendlies! Let's just see how things pan out after the first two or three league matches before getting over excited. Do you know who Richards and Ajala played for last season ?

Try harder next time Matt but please don't ever write a full match report . If it takes you a zillion words to describe one goal then if we ever get a 4-2 or a 5-3 then you will still be waffling on right up to kick off before the next match !!

Greavsie mentioned at the Fans Forum that we wanted to play with a High Line defensively(as per the World Cup winners!) last season,but didn't have the players then, at the back, with the pace to do this.Nicholson's gone but Tonge's still at right-back(have we abandoned Thompson taking that role on?) and Downes is still in central defence,so we're still too slow to employ those tactics,I guess?

Regards the Richards/Young midfield partnership. Is this one that has pontential to work? I know it was only a friendly but does Richards seem the ball winner and chaser we need to accompany Young?

Certainly not as far as Thompson is concerned. He replaced Tonge last night and put in an excellent cross, right on the money, for the Benyon equaliser. Something which, sadly, we quite simply haven't seen enough of from Tonge.

As for the other side, I thought Cruise struggled with the pace of their winger in the second half and so Left Back remains a position to be filled (Cargill?) although it must we said that young Levi Ives (only 17 I think) was very impressive in the first half and is definitely one for the future. He put in a couple of excellent passes down the line and was so good that I wouldn't have a problem with him starting when the real action begins as I think he is already good enough to handle the situation.

Perhaps his form might cost Cruise a contract offer. Interesting he started instead of Cruise last night. A kick up the arse or a sign of how highly Hargreaves rates him?

How did the midfield partnership look CP? Did Richards show enough to deserve a contract/starting place for next season?
