Well, its no secret how I feel about the yellow and white stripes in general. However, begrudgingly I did admit a while ago it is actually a smart top and it did grow on me a bit. This shirt is definitely the best of the 3 that we have had of that design. It does not really work as a football shirt and part of a kit though. With the white shorts and socks the whole kit just looks ridiculous, it is the last possible combo I would have put with that shirt. The whole thing just looks wrong. The best combo of those colours we had was back in 91 with blue shorts and yellow socks. My main problem is I just dont want any white in the kit, I much prefer just the yellow and blue, that is what I feel is our identity.

Every time we have tried to accomodate yellow, blue and white as a kit all together it has never worked or looked right.

The worst ever attempt was a few seasons ago when we had yellow shirts and shorts with white socks. That looked badly designed, awful, very amateurish and really didnt work. It just didnt look right at all. It looked like we had turned up, forgotten our proper socks and had to borrow some, not right at all, dreadful, truly, truly dreadful.

As for navy shorts in our current combo, the occasions we wore them last season the kit looked a million times better as a whole and if it wasnt Torquay United wearing it I would have said it was a decent, smart kit. If the shirts are staying then surely the shorts must change to navy.

In the future if the club insist on having white in the kit, especially the socks, it must be a Brazil style combo, yellow shirts, blue shorts and white socks. It is the only way those the colours work together as a kit, it looks bright and smart and it is an iconic image.

Which looks best, you decide -

Stripes have never been good for Torquay.

Back in the magpie days, with black and white stripes, it was only when we changed to the gold and blue satin horse jockey shirts that we stopped being crap.

Our first incarnation of yellow and white stripes ended in relegation followed by just surviving a second successive one. (91-93) The following year when we discarded the stripes we made the play-offs.
When we wore yellow and blue stripes under Don O/Hodges (95-97) we finished rock bottom followed by a season of relegation fighting before discarding the stripes saw us reach the play-offs the following year.
Our 2nd incarnation of yellow and white stripes saw us survive relegation v Barnet on the last day. A year after getting rid of them, Leroy joined us.
Our 3rd incarnation of stripes see us get relegated. Expect more strife next season.

Like chunky, however, I do really like the yellow and white stripes. It is unique. I don't know of any other teams who wear them, so perhaps we should give them the opportunity to redeem themselves.

Whoa there, I didnt actually say I like them, I just dont hate them as much as I first did. The shirt actually doesnt look too bad up close, but on the pitch and on tv it looks awful. It doesnt work. There is obviously good reason why no other teams wear a shirt like it!

I mainly hate it because to me it is not a Torquay United kit. We must go back to yellow shirts, blue shorts and yellow socks next time surely.Thats a Torquay United kit!

Some rough ideas of what I would like to see and how a Torquay United kit should be -

I think it depends when you started watching Torquay. For me, the first game I saw was in the 70s with the Scalectrix kit and the 80s with Steve Cooper and Bukta. White kits with yellow and blue as accent colours, so I have always liked it when we have white in our kit.

The stripes are unique. That's the thing I like about them. I don't know another team that wears yellow and white stripes. I expect there is an obvious team, somewhere who do, but I have always thought it looked smart - just the fact its unlucky that I have against it.

Like I said, this is probably true, and for good reason!
