Ryan Jarvis Comments

Post by nickbrod »

Interesting quotes from Ryan Jarvis in the Football League paper about his time with us regarding goalscoring: " I've always known that if I play regularly I can produce," he said.
"But when you are in and out of the team, you don't have that confidence in front of goal, or match fitness, which makes it hard for you to go in and do well."
Isn't Ryan currently top scorer in League 2 since York play him every game?
I can't help thinking that Benyon is suffering the same fate ie lack of match time, after all he is a proven goalscorer given the right service. Hawley meanwhile has been given starts in all but one match for a miserable return of two goals not surprising when ,for a striker, he rarely shoots. At least Azeez looks the real deal but can we keep him longer than a month?

What?! You mean Knill in glaringly obvious mismanagement saga? Never in a million years. :}

It's early days but Jarvo is doing well. Give him service and he'll score goals, I've always said that. The only thing is he is doing that now but for York. :-/

Generic comments from a generic striker. He's hit a purple patch and is the go to guy at a deeply ordinary club. Not a lot to see here. Every striker in the world thinks he'll score every time he walks on the pitch. Those who don't search for something to blame and lack of pitch time is a pretty good excuse. As it happens, not playing all too often didn't really seem to affect him too badly, but Ling was obsessed with 4-5-1 and wouldn't change his mind even when the world's fattest, least athletic adult male stopped hacking the ball into the net from the penalty spot and decided to wander about on the wing instead.

As for Knill, of 26 starts for Torquay, 12 of them came under Knill. During the summer, he was set to be offered a deal until he went to AK's office and informed him that York had made an offer of £x. Knilly knew we couldn't possibly match the terms mentioned, so he was out the door.

Across his career to the start of this season, he had 33 goals in 135 games (one in four), so his return at York of 6 in 10 is anomalous. I always liked him and he would have been a nice alternative, but let's not pretend we've sold Rooney for a song; Jarvis is an ordinary L2 striker who has hit some form, not the next Rickie Lambert.

Matt.

They're not particularly interesting comments. I imagine he was asked a question regarding his good form and answered it with this. He is now 27 years old, so isn't likely to improve a great deal, just as Matt said, he has hit a good run of form. As it stands, he was very highly rated aged 16-18 and had dropped lower and lower ever since. He has never been prolific, and will need to keep this run going for a bit longer before we regret his departure. Carayol certainly, Kee possibly, Jarvis? Not in my opinion.

Baring in mind Jarvis spent most of his time for us playing on the right-wing it's no surprise he's scoring more for York playing as a striker.
As for Benyon, I would agree. I am sure had he had the game time Ball did we would have a higher number in the goals-for column...

:-D

Fully agree re Benyon. As for Ryan Jarvis, I thought he was one of the few players who came through with some credit last season. He certainly worked his socks off for the team wherever he was asked to play.

The key thing to remember here is, however you feel about Alan Knill, Ryan Jarvis was offered a contract by York, which he (RJ) could not refuse and us tufc could not match, so no ones fault, football as we all know can be cut throat, on Jarvis, York turned us over.

My point for starting this thread was not to want Jarvis back but to highlight his comments about players, especially strikers, not getting regular match time, as to a reason why they don't score.
Knill didn't have to re-sign Benyon but he did. Hawley, though, has played virtually every game but can't score. If Benyon was a regular starter I'm sure his scoring touch would return.
For me Hawley could do a better job as a mid-field player.
Against Mansfield I'd have Benyon and Azeez up front. Bodin, by the way netted last night for Wales's fourth in the Under-21 International. Good that he's rediscovered the knack!!

Jarvis was average at best, he's had a little flurry of goals with York fair play and good luck to him but I don't think he's any better than the forward lads we've got.

I agree, Jarvis was average. I thought he upped his game towards the end of the season and seemed to want the ball a bit more. Mid-season I thought he hid and lacked bottle.
