WASPS

Post by Wisconsin_gull »

Perhaps this needs to be in the rant thread...

Please can anyone out there shed any light on the purpose of Wasps in the natural world. Having spent a day with a hose tackling a honking big wasp nest in my compost bin I confess that I am struggling with this question.... :@

Any tips for good wasp traps gratefully accepted!

Wasps, like bees, are pollinators. Apart from that, what is their use? What is the use of life? It's probably true that they are more of a nuisance to humans than bees are (they are attracted to our sweet and fruity foods) and that some species may be more aggressive than others, but at least they don't leave their sting behind them as bees do, so unless you have a nest nearby, it's usually easiest and best to ignore them, and to cover up your jampots.

Due to caps lock abuse, I presumed this would be a thread about white, Anglo-Saxon Protestants.

I hate wasps. More than anything, I think!

Gloster - I don't like those types with the wrong shaped balls o:)

Anyway, wasps are indeed very scary things, nearly as bad as spiders. I have never, touch wood, been stung and reckon that once I have survived a wasp sting, I won't find them so upsetting. However I'm not brave enough to go and get stung...

Best thing to distract them is to put a drop of bitter in a jam jar, then watch the buggars drown.

Totally distracted at the thought of forever publicly revealing his "landing gear" :O I did not check the progress of the nest following the multiple drenchings with water administered yesterday...In case this safe and environmentally friendly approach failed, I have identified the only safe option to petrol bombing (thanks USAMG)
For $20 this could be very satisfying.
Not much call for pollination at this time of the year - Have it! :-D
