Best Goal of 2012

Post by Plymouth Gull »

Which TUFC goal do you think was best in 2012? Off the top of my head I don't recall many standouts this year, perhaps Nathan Craig vs Gillingham.

My favourite was Rene Howe at Burton in March, a superb strike out of nowhere to seal the win. Outstanding effort!

I liked the Howe goal away at Chesterfield this season. It wasn't anything spectacular but he seized on a mistake near the halfway line and ran and ran towards the keeper, he even took it wide and he rounded the goalie and slid it in. Pure class. The reason that stands out for me is that i distinctly remember at the time a feeling that came over me that i was 100% sure he was going to finish it and i was celebrating before he'd even put it away near enough. It was like time stood still as we urged him forward and from start to finish it seemed to last an eternity. If we as fans had so much time to think about what he was going to do then i'm sure Rene would have done too but he took the goal without fuss. Pure quality.

The Howe goal at Burton Nick was also up there and i enjoyed the link up play between Craig and Stevens to set up Jarvis for our goal at home to Northampton just before Christmas. It was the one piece of quality in 90 minutes of poo and a really well worked purposeful attack. It shows what we CAN do but we don't do it. Ending on a negative though ( sorry all! ) as Nick says, most of our goals have been pretty run of the mill stuff.
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

There are many variants I would consider when choosing.

Best goal skill-wise; Danny Stevens vs Barnet. Released via a Rene Howe flick on, Danny still had it all to do but executed a half volley to perfection from a very acute angle and in doing so lobbed the keeper to secure us all 3 very important points. It was the one piece of genuine quality on the night and showed that Danny has excellent technique.

Most iconic goal; Mansell vs Argyle. Stood right in line with the ball as it hit the net powerfully via a Mansell half volley. Time stood still as he connected with it clean and true, sending 2000 fans into delirium and ensuring bragging rights over our neighbours. I have a newspaper article with a picture of Manse's celebration on my wall. That one picture sums up why I am a Torquay fan and how much It means to me.

The emotional goal: Eunan vs Crawley. 500 Yellow fans flooded the Broadfield Stadium and were singing loud and proud up to an hour before kick-off. Our infamous history with Evans and Raynor (and Crawley in the FA Cup) meant it was a highly charged atmosphere, spiced further by being a top of the table clash and further still by their stewards being jobsworths and keeping us penned in a small corner of the ground right up until kick off. With 10 minutes to go Eunan smashes in a superb half volley right in front of us and years of hatred, frustration, vitriol and vengeance is released in a single second. Never has a goal been celebrated with such intense feeling, I would say the celebration lasted right up until the final whistle where finally, FINALLY, we had managed to get one over the gruesome twosome.

This season hasn't seen such an array of memorable netbusters, however I offer you three Rene Howe pearlers.

a) Rochdale at Home, with a mixture of outmuscling a outpacing a couple of Dale defenders, Howe closes in on goal and scoops a delightful chip over the on-rushing goal to add a fourth goal in a match where we were threatening to run riot.

b) Aldershot at Home, simply because at 3-0 down it really did not seem possible that we could, would or indeed should turn it round. Howe's precise shot from outside the box made the 4-3 comeback complete, a feat I doubt we'll see repeated.

c) Rovers Away. 2-0 and a man down, we looked hopelessly dead and buried, Downsey reduced the arrears (from a pinpoint Nico free-kick I might add) before Rene curls it into the top corner from just inside the box, it was a sumptuous finish and showed a team full of courage to come back. Lets hope that spirit hasn't been forgotten about in the weeks to come.
