Out of contract players.

Post by Plymouth Gull »

Right, just had a quick look at the summer overview I did over pre-season, and it shows that the majority of the squad are out of contract at the end of this season. So, out of these players would be your first ones to try and agree a new deal with?

Rice
Oastler
Saah
Leadbitter
McKenzie?
Cruise
Downes
Macklin
Morris
Stevens
Halpin
Thompson?
Easton
Howe
Yeoman
Jarvis

Obviously Howe is the standout there. However as supergulls says on the 'Howe record' thread, do we think he's likely to stay?

Other than big Rene, I think Downes and Saah are big ones. As is Oastler.

I know it's still plenty of time but Im bored and thought it'd create some discussion. So yeh, if you had your way, who would you try and keep?

I think that apart from the already mentioned it would be great to keep Danny. He has been with us for 5 years or so..so I would really like him to stay. He hasn't had the greatest start of the season but he proved that he can deliver with the 10 goals from last season which is a very good record for a winger. It would be great to have more players who have stayed with us for a long time, something which is quite unusual in lower leagues but I am a big fan of. I would also say Mackers could be one for the future if he has the right attitude to the game and of course stays fit (something which he hasn't been able to do so far unfortunately). Probably give him a one year last chance contract. If Cruise is happy to be a replacement left back for the future than he is also more than welcome to stay, plus he can develop a lot and potentially make a race for the starting left back position which would always be good for the team. I am also unsure about Thompson and Mckenzie but if their contracts expire at the end of this season (I think they expire at the end of next season) they should be offered new ones.

Definitely a lot still to play for for many of those players. I'd say the only ones you'd offer a deal to right now would be:
Oastler
Thompson
Downes
Saah
Howe

The rest have until the end of their contract to prove they can contribute to the team. I realise I left Stevens out, which, by my own admission, may be a little harsh but I'd like to see him return to last year's form before committing to a new deal now.
Maybe one day, Carayol will find London...
