The climax of the 2024/25 NLS league season sees The Gulls head to Hertfordshire to take on Hemel Hempstead on Saturday, with the ultimate prize still very much up for grabs. A scarcely-believable scenario sees no less than a quarter of the division in with a shout of taking the National League South title tomorrow, and although Paul Wotton’s men currently lie behind leaders Truro City on goal difference, two thousands United fans will be descending on Vauxhall Road tomorrow in the hope that one more twist in a the tail of this remarkable season will see the promotion pendulum decisively swing Torquay’s way come full-time.   The Permutations Image With six teams still in with a mathematical shot of finishing in top spot – and with none of the top six facing each other – there are  whole host on different scenarios that could play out tomorrow. Let’s keep things as simple as possible, and concentrate on things from a TUFC perspective. With Truro and United the only two teams on 86 points, the other four teams below them all know they will be relying on BOTH slipping up in order to give them an opportunity to claim the division’s one automatic promotion place. Although it’s theoretically possible that a draw or even defeat for United (coupled with extremely favourable scores elsewhere) could still see them finish top of the pile, it’s safe to say a win at Hemel will be seen by most as the only realistic way the Yellow Army will be celebrating tomorrow evening.
  • If United win and Truro don’t, The Gulls will return to the fifth tier as NLS champions. Simple as that.
  • If the Cornish side do beat relegation-threatened St Albans at home, then Wotton’s side can still overcome City on Goal Difference, however, they will need to win their match by at least two more than Truro manage. For example if Truro win 1-0, then a 3-0 win would be enough for United.
  • However, if both Truro and Torquay finish level-pegging in the table on Goal Difference AND Goals Scored, then City would be declared champions by virtue of having won a game more than United over the course of the season. So, if City win 2-1, then a 3-0 for United would NOT be enough… but a 4-1 win WOULD – on Goals Scored.
Makes sense, right? Let’s move on…   Who’s the boss? Image Lee Allinson was named as the man to replace Bobby Wilkinson last December, after the Tudors’ previous boss left his role following a decline in form that saw Hemel fall down the table following a promising start. Allinson made the switch from Hendon, where he had been manager for the last five years and whom he left in 7th position in the Isthmian League Premier Division. Lee is supported at Vauxhall Road by his management team of Chris Winton (Assistant Manager), Gary King (Director of Football), and his father, former Arsenal and Colchester United midfielder Ian Allinson (Football Operations).   How have they been doing? After a stunning start to the 2024/25 campaign saw Hemel establish themselves as one of the early-season pacesetters, a dramatic loss of form eventually paved the way for the departure of Wilkinson. Having looked set for a relegation battle at one point around the festive period, such has been the improvement under Allinson, that their total of 62 points from 45 games now sees them enter their last game guaranteed of safety with something to spare.   Player to watch Image Having made 46 appearances this season, left-sided defender Kyla Ajayi  is in his fifth season with the Tudors since joining from Dunstable Town in 2020. A powerful defender who was named the club’s Player of the Season last time out, his remarkable consistency and reliability have already made him a fan favourite, and having also registered five goals during the course of this campaign, United’s defenders will need to be aware of his danger from set-pieces too.   Played for both Image Former Gull Aaron Jarvis started his career at hometown club Basingstoke Town in the 2016/17 season, with his 14 goals in 47 games prompting the then League Two Luton Town to sign him on a two year deal. Although he only made five appearances for the Hatters, he did enjoy action after being loaned out to Boreham Wood and then Falkirk in the Scottish Championship. Upon his release from Kenilworth Road, Jarvis joined Sutton United, before a loan stint at Hemel Hempstead saw him notch one goal in six league games. Scunthorpe United were next destination for the striker, prior to his departure at Glanford Park alerting the attention of then-United boss Gary Johnson. During his first season at Plainmoor, Jarvis became the first player since Robin Stubbs in the 1965/66 campaign to score two hat-tricks in one season, and after remaining at Plainmoor following relegation in 2023, he was a firm favourite with the Yellow Army prior to departing for Yeovil last summer.   Previous Encounter Image Hemel Hempstead 1 – 4 United | National League South | Tuesday February 12th 2019 United’s last win at Vauxhall Road came as Gary Johnson’s side marched towards the 2018/19 NLS title, and a similar result this weekend may see them repeat that feat. On an evening when they provided equal measures of style and substance, United eventually wore down their opponents, with goals from Saikou Janneh, Jake Andrews, Asa Hall and Jamie Reid nullifying Frankie Musonda’s sole late effort for Town.   Not got a ticket for tomorrow’s game?
