Chippenham 1 (Bradbury 41′)
United 3 (Carson 9′, Zanzala 57′, Jay 90+8′) United secured a welcome three points on the road on Tuesday evening, as they beat Chippenham 3-1 at Hardenhuish Park. Matt Carson’s early goal gave The Gulls the lead, only for Caine Bradbury to level the scores just before the break. Offrande Zanzala’s first goal for the club in the second half saw United back in front though, and after soaking up everything the hosts had to give, Matt Jay wrapping things up with United’s third in the dying stages. Paul Wotton opted for the same side that drew 2-2 with Boreham Wood on Saturday, as a rare unchanged side took on the Bluebirds. The match was only nine minutes when United took the lead – just as they had done on Saturday. This time the goal came via a different source, as Zanzala’s break down the left edge of the penalty area resulted in a low ball across the face of goal. Although the unmarked Jordan Thomas will have been disappointed he was unable to force the ball home himself, Carson was on hand to finish the job by flinging himself at the loose ball, before watching his header nestle into the back of the net.

The men in yellow held the lead up until four minutes before the break, when a concerted spell of Chippenham pressure ended with Bradbury drilling a low shot past James Hamon from 22 yards out, following a decent passing move from the hosts. All-square at the change of ends. Torquay started the second period well, and nearly regained the lead within a few moments of the restart, as Thomas’ strike from inside the box clipped the crossbar on its way behind. That strong start was rewarded just short of the hour mark. After Chippenham claims for a foul on the edge of the D fell on deaf ears, Young seized upon the home side’s hesitancy by dinking the ball into the path of Zanzala, and although home ‘keeper Will Henry smothered his initial effort, Zanzala followed up the shot to bundle the ball over the goal line.

Although the Bluebirds’ pursuit for a leveller saw United’s backline absorb a fair amount of Chippenham possession in the last half-hour, Hamon remained relatively unemployed. When 8 minutes of additional time were signalled, you’d have forgiven a few groans amongst the travelling contingent. However, having witnessed the pain of losing late points at Chelmsford and Plainmoor recently, this time a late, late goal sealed the deal instead. A defensive lapse alerted the attentions of Jay, and despite nearly running himself into the ground for the previous 90+ minutes, the man from the Bay was coolness personified as he slotted home from close range to make it 3-1 and spark wild celebrations in the away end. Another away test is only a few days away – with Tonbridge the next destination – but for now, an enjoyable journey home is certainly well-earned.
