OUR FIRST 12 GAMES

Post by portugull »

Gary Johnson made a good point in his interview yesterday that we had played a lot of the top teams.

It is true we have played 8 teams in the Top 12 of which 5 are in the top 8. We may have lost at Solihull, Boreham Wood and Bromley but at least we got a point at Notts County & Chesterfield.

Against the teams in the bottom half we have won all 4. Maidenhead, Southend,Wealdstone and Kings Lynn the last 3 all at home.

So to all the doom mongers I say it is a long old season and with 32 games to play it is early days. Keep your chins up! COYY.

While you have a point, it's been our performances in some of those games that have been a problem. Against Solihull, Boreham Wood, Bromley, Woking, and Altrincham we were absolutely dire. You can make allowances for earlier games - players bedding in, etc - but aside from the first half against Maidenhead and vs Wealdstone, we haven't got anywhere near the threat of last season.

Against Chesterfield we were second best for the majority of the game, and only played for the last 15 minutes. (that said, I thought we were by far the better team at Notts prior to Omar's sending off, and still did very well for the remaining hour or so with only ten men).

I still think we are better than we have shown so far this season, but we are some way off from threatening the top places. There's still a decent chance that we can make a run at the playoffs - and if we get there, who knows what'll happen - but we will need to continue to improve week on week rather than the pattern of decent result follow by abject failure pattern that's epitomised our season to date.

The final thing to say is that yes, we've done well against 'better' teams, but that was the same last season. As far as I recall,we only lost once to another team in the top 7 (Hartlepool, at home). It was the games against the lesser lights of the league that cost us the title; Maidenhead, Wealdstone, etc etc.
