You have to go back to the days of Walter Winterbottom and Alf Ramsey when England managers were given years to develop the squads. For example under the Ramsey era you had between 66/70 Gordon Banks (Stoke) Peter Bonetti (Chelsea) Alex Stepney (Man Utd) Gordon West (Everton) Tony Waiters (Blackpool). All top class goalkeepers. Although I admit with the influx of overseas goalkeepers in the modern game it is much more difficult to achieve today.
