Season tickets, donations to the players fund and VAT

Post by Modgull »

There has been no mention of VAT in all the musings about the likely income from season ticket sales and it may help those considering whether to make contributions to the players fund if they knew the VAT situation.

I believe that all ticket sales, whether season tickets or individual match entrance costs, attract VAT at 20%. I also believe (but someone please correct me if I am wrong) that contributions to the players fund would not be subject to VAT. Thus all contributions to the latter go to the Club.

Extending the debate on the low level of the season ticket offer, this means that anyone who decides to make total payments similar to last year (a mix of the season ticket price and donation to the players fund) would actually be substantially increasing the playing budget.

Does anyone know if this argument holds water?

I think you are probably correct and it is a good point. The Players Fund is for donations which I am sure are not liable to VAT.

As I understand it, one potential advantage of leaving the European Union is that the UK will have complete freedom to set its own VAT rates, or even change to a different taxation system.
When Brexit eventually happens, perhaps clubs like ours could lobby the Government for some tax relief, or a reduced rate.. :)
