IN THE HISTORY BOOKS: Torquay 0-1 Hartlepool – 17th February 2007

In a bid to bring content from our old main site to the forum now the old site is closed, here is this weeks archive for your reading pleasure, (posted 29th August 2013)...

It has been over 6 years since Torquay United welcomed Hartlepool United to Plainmoor. Due to Hartlepool stopping in a higher division than United in recent campaigns, it has been quite a sparse fixture, with just four meetings in the last decade. I have chosen to look at this match as it is the last meeting between the two sides.

It came in February of the 2006/07 season which was one to forget for everyone involved at Plainmoor. Off-field problems were the major talking point, as was the idea that the English Riviera may have been without a professional football team, such were the concerns. This game is one that I literally can’t remember anything about, but here is the side that took to the field is the yellow shirt;

Kevin Miller, Lee Andrews, Matthew Halliday, Dean Gordon, Mark Robinson, Matt Hockley, Lloyd Kerry, Kevin Hill, Lee Mansell, Jamal Easter, Lee Thorpe. Subs: Martin Horsell, Steven Cooke, Paul Smith, Chris McPhee, Leon Hapgood.

I must confess that there are a couple of names there that I have no recollection of, Halliday, Robinson, Smith and Cooke stand out. Anyway, the game at Plainmoor was watched by just 2194 supporters, of which not many would have travelled from the North-East. The match itself was just 7 minutes old when ex-Gull Eifion Williams put the away side infront. That would prove to be the only strike of the match, and 3 points were going north. As I mention though, bigger concerns were on the forefront of the clubs mind at the time, but thankfully those concerns were dealt with in the summer.
