We need one point more than the bottom four...............that's just my opinion though.....
TUFC never fails to let its fanbase down.

Our target should be 77 points. That's the 20 we already have, plus 3 points from each of our remaining games. Obviously we're not going to achieve that, but to win each game as it comes should be our target.
We CAN do this !! Interesting points target by Jack. Southport have pulled themselves out of the mire and Halifax look as if they are getting out as well and there's no reason why we can't do likewise. There will be teams that will slump during this second half of the season. I'm not going to name any because a few weeks ago, I rashly suggested that Woking were in meltdown after a poor run of results and all of their players being made available for loan. Look where they are now - just outside the play off positions, thanks in part to a few goals from Joe Quigley.
The crux of Jack's post is that we must get points from home matches and that's where we, the fans, come in. The support on Boxing Day against FGR and away at Cheltenham was fantastic - we have to keep that going for the next three months. Plainmoor must become Fortress Plainmoor as it used to be where opposition sides were not given any leeway. As we all know in football, results never go as predicted. We will no doubt drop a few points at home and pick up a few surprise points away.
One important factor is the decisions of officials of course. The sending off of Courtney Richards and the penalty decision against Durrell Berry were two debatable decisions during the Christmas matches.

Southport have won their last 6 games and I will stonewall guarantee they haven't played in all of them as well as we did on average over 4.5 hours over Christmas and New Year. I've seen the top two a total of four times this season and they've been dogshit throughout. This division is packed full of absolute tripe. We seem to be tripe in form (performance wise). We conceded 5 goals in 3 games. One pen, one OG, two flukes and a screamer (or two screamers and a fluke, depending on how you think that Marsh-Brown caught his volley). We've seemingly cut out the dreadful defending and it's now the rub of the green doing for us.
We're upholding our end, we're making it tough for the oppo to score and we're looking likely to score a goal or two ourselves. Maths, averages and plain old Lady Luck really will have to fall on our side sooner or later, that's just how the world works.
Matt.

Our points target will depend on the boards investment in the team. Many have left the club however nobody of any quality has arrived.
As of today I will stick my neck out and say we should make 30 points this season!

(*darkside alert*) I don't think we have any chance at all. Again, the stats. prove this; teams that are bottom (or as good as) don't (or very rarely) climb away from that position. No, it's away at Weston-super-Mare and Bath City next season.

Ah, Wivel ...... you're old enough to know the perils of trying to prove ANYTHING by statistics !! Southport have turned their season around and are well away from the relegation four and Halifax, who looked dead a buried a few weeks ago, are likewise getting their act together.wivelgull wrote:(*darkside alert*) I don't think we have any chance at all. A mate who lives 'up country' who is not a United fan watched the FGR game on BT sports and he reckons we played well and are 'too good' to go down. He reckoned the difference was that when players were tiring on a heavy ground, FGR were able to bring on Marsh-Brown and Guthrie and we couldn't cope with fresh legs (which is exactly as some who attended the match posted). We had nobody on the Bench to bring on apart from Murombedzi who is not in the same class as Marsh-Brown and Guthrie. That brings me on to Kevgull's post - fully agree. Ajala will be a useful addition to the squad but we also need to bring in two or three other players as well. It will be intersting to see who can be persuaded to come to a struggling National League side. You may well be right, Wivel. Time will tell ........

tomogull you make a fair point but I would say this in response.
We are struggling big time but compared to some teams in the National League we play before 1,500 to 1,800 crowds, we were in the Football League from 1928 to 2014 barring 2 years, we have a decent ground, a nice part of the country compared to Gateshead, a very supportive fan base and a good reputation as a Football Club.
I accept our geographical location, for some players ,is a big no no , and Ryan Bowman chose to sign for Gateshead (12 goals already) but I still think
our pedigree beats the likes of Boreham Wood and Guiseley.

Having started this thread I was hoping for at least a draw today to say that my 7 points target for January was still possible with the home games against Braintree and Welling still to be played. I wasn't really expecting anything from the away games but I was hoping for 2 wins and 1 draw from the home games so losing to Gateshead screwed that up.
To put things into perspective our last five league games have been against the top two over Christmas/ New year and we have played Gateshead and Tranmere after they have hit a bit of form themselves and are on a bit of a high.
What I do find interesting is that despite all the changes at our Club the fans expectations are high and a 2-1 defeat in a game that we didn't really expect any return from is now seen as a disaster and the shrill voices are calling for the managers head. History shows that lots of teams have panicked in our situation and made things worse so let's just rally around the manager and players an try and ensure that we don't finish in the bottom four.

If history shows lots of teams have panicked in our position and made things worse, find an historical example for me of a team of hopeless players and manager, 11 points from safety, who did nothing and made things better.Jack wrote:Having started this thread I was hoping for at least a draw today to say that my 7 points target for January was still possible with the home games against Braintree and Welling still to be played. Although it's not mathematically impossible, I'd be surprised if we get 4 more wins this season, let alone 4 more than the teams above us, which is what it will take
There are several examples on the Premier League website.
The most recent was Wigan Athletic who had 22 points from 29 games and ended up with 43 from 38 games in season 2011-12. They stuck with Roberto Martinez
Last season Leicester had 19 points from 29 games and then won 7 of their last 9 games to stay up. Nigel Pearson was their manager but got sacked during the close season for non footballing reasons.

Wigan were 5 points behind in January, and 3 in March. Leicester were 3 points off at the beginning of February. That can be made up in one match given the right results. We are effectively 11 points off. Which means even a remarkable run of form would in all likelihood not be enough. If we win 8 more games, our relegation rivals above the line only need to win 4 out of 18 to stay above us, which they almost certainly will. This team won't win 8 more games.

More than happy with my prediction!

My original post set out where I thought the points might reasonably come from to achieve 50+ points. That is what we have to aim for. It is still possible so let's stay positive.

Just how do you think this group of players under the novice are suddenly going to start winning matches? I would be interested to know.Jack wrote:My original post set out where I thought the points might reasonably come from to achieve 50+ points. That is what we have to aim for.
