This year's Gilbert
I have been wondering who will be Gilbert this year. There were two or three last year, pretty awful on the whole EXCEPT the character who danced to The Bird's The Word. Now that's the sort of Gilbert we need. I have long called for a much more explosive Gilbert (a suicide bomber Gilbert is the ideal, of course), but, lacking that, one who will perform cartwheels, be guillotined, annoy visiting supporters (rather than placating them), save (rather than take) penalties, join in with dancing girls, abseil down from the big stand, in fact, why not have Gilbert parachuting in from outer space?
Naturally there is only one candidate, but he (OneCanLasher) has for a long time now indicated that, although he loved the job, he is unable to attend. Which is why I suggest that all those players on the transfer list give 2% of their wages towards Gilbert's salary; then OneCanLasher could turn professional.
Everyone loves Gilbert, except the old, the dead, and the terminally boring.
Gilbert can do the twist and he can really rock'n'roll.

I would do most of that.(well apart from being a suicide bomber and absieling from the stand roof. cant stand heights. But I cannot afford to come down to all matches. Entry is nt the problem its the train fare. cant drive at the moment untill the neuro surgoen gives the all clear. I think much like you but if anyone is willing to take me down on a regular basis i would love to give it a go.
Always Look on the bright side of life

I think all those players on the transfer list should take it turns to don the costume. Make a game out of it. Get the kids to guess who it is every week. I'm writing this one down.wivelgull wrote:I suggest that all those players on the transfer list give 2% of their wages towards Gilbert's salary

For heaven sake - Bruce was fine as Gilbert 10 years plus ago but the guy is well past his prime now!!wivelgull wrote: Naturally there is only one candidate, but he (OneCanLasher) has for a long time now indicated that, although he loved the job, he is unable to attend. Get some new blood in - someone under the age of 40!

As said before, Bruce (onecanlasher) is a personal friend of mine, he is dad of 2 , and has job that requires him to work weekends, he said to me just a months ago after your last post, it's something in his past and he doesn't want to go back to, Baygull's right, need a young lad who will put the commitment in like Bruce did.

I'm glad to see that GILBERT made an appearance on Tuesday. Is he permanent, does anyone know? Or is he merely one of the fly-by-nights that appeared last season. And what of the GILBERT dance? That was one of last season's highlights.
While we're on the subject, I wonder where the GILBERT outfit is made, it seems professionally done. And the incident of the missing head? Can anyone tell me what match that was?

On a serious note, I don't think people should underestimate the role of the club mascot to young fans and getting young ones into football. Often, watching footy is bloody hard work so if the bouncy friendly mascot pops up here and there before the game, at half time and so on to interact with young kids then it makes it a bit more memorable and takes the edge of the shitness of Karl Hawley et al.
Torquay does have an ageing fanbase (no offence Scotty
:na: ) but the future of the club depends on both old and new.
The itinerary of a mascot on matchday especially should be an intense one.

Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

The new Gilbert doesn't do anything. He just sits behind the goal in the family stand and watches the game.

Well, exactly, Mr. Danny. GILBERT needs to get his arse into gear and do some entertaining, after all that's what he's there for. Don't tell me the old GILBERT has re-appeared.
