Burton or Fleetwood?

Personally I'm backing Burton because of Billy.

Prefer Burton, and also Fleetwood slapped us 4-1 at the beginning of the season

I also wanted Burton to win. No particular reason other than Burton has been a league side longer than Fleetwood (wasn't it Burton that won the league when we were promoted from the Conference?).

But you have to hand it to Fleetwood. They've been bankrolled by a wealthy businessman who has ploughed money into the club for no other reason than he loves the club. Rather like Paul & Thea Bristow. When he decided to put money into the club, they were on the verge of bankruptcy. He reckons he has spent more than £10 million and the gate for his first game as chairman was 80. They have now had six promotions in nine years - that is one hell of a record. So a somewhat begrudging 'well done' to their chairman, who seems to keep a low profile in spite of the team's success, and the Cod Army. The chairman's philosophy is 'you have to create an infrastructure that keeps the tills ringing'. Sounds like something re-christened DerbyshireAndy has been wittering on about on another thread

P.S. I wonder if we could persuade the chairman to move to Brixham? After all, it's a MUCH more attractive fishing port than Fleetwood ....... even if they haven't got a Tesco's :}

I'd have liked to have seen Burton go up. Some of their fans made some nice and refreshing comments about us when I was walking back to my car after a game at the Pirelli a few seasons ago and I thought that was a nice touch.

However, we shouldn't begrudge the success of Fleetwood. They've spent the cash and have slowly been rewarded. There is no point in being bitter about these teams like Chesterfield and Fleetwood any more. Good luck to them. They've taken risks with finances, invested and played the system to the best effect and it has paid off. We've operated frugally but have ended up on our arses. I'm not saying that we should be risking it just as much if we had the opportunity, that's a debate for another day but it would be nice to enjoy football once more.

Wembley Division 2 play off - attendance less than 15,000. Pathetic. Watching the highlights (so called) on the Football League programme, it didn't look a very inspiring game. Burton looked less than impressive ...... I thought it summed up Div 2 last season.

Watched the Burton vs Fleetwood game and I also thought that it was poor and just hoped that one side would score as I wanted to see another programe on imeadeatly after the ninty minuet's was up,thank god for the Burton goalie who made the rick.I suppose Fleetwood have the cash to improve their side and will manage to stay up.Can't help but think the Torquay of Leroy's would have gone the whole season unbeaten against this very poor league,maybe.

Yes - I felt for the Burton 'keeper. Goalkeeper has to be the worst position to play. He made two brilliant saves in the first ten minutes but they're forgotten when he makes a hash by misjudging a free kick. Contrast that with Gareth Bale who had an awful game on Saturday night but then pops up to score a goal that even Karl Hawley would have scored (okay - I slightly exaggerate !) and all of a sudden he's a hero. No justice.

Money does indeed talk in all walks of life, but in this case I would point out that Burnley who won automatic promotion ahead of QPR, and Rochdale ahead of Fleetwood so you've still got to use the money wisely, because those with less can from time to time shout louder.

That's just it, Dave. Fleetwood, on Rochdale's budget would have been relegated by February and Rochdale on Fleetwood's budget would have amassed 130 points.

Have a look at the relegation places. That we finished just 5 points behind Rovers represents a catastrophic failure on their part.

Rather than celebrating going up via the playoffs, Fleetwood should be slinking quietly off to undertake a full assessment of what went so catastrophically wrong. The paper has been neatly applied to the cracks by a dreadful error from the Burton keeper.
It's like Man City a couple of years ago, it was a disastrous season when you look at the money they spent, but two goals in added time against a QPR side who were desperate to give them all the help in the world saw them over the line.

Success is relative to a number of things, budget being one of them. Clubs like QPR and Fleetwood represent dismal failure masked by the success of the playoffs. While that's better than a poke in the eye with a pointy stick and it's considerably better than the likes of Portsmouth, Northants and Rovers, it's a long way south of what they should be achieving given all their circumstances.

That's the beauty of football in the England though. Other than the Premier League, ANY club regardless of budget in the rest of the leagues IMO can achieve things when all the cards fall right. There will always be clubs who mismanage, spend big (relatively) and their managers will make a right pigs ear of proceedings and there will always be clubs without so much as a bean who defy the odds due to solid astute management on and off the field. That's why our persistent 'small club' mentality grates a bit. Yes we are a small club but we can still achieve.

The latter for us I hope for next season?
