worst film sequels/remakes/reboots

no limit to how many you can think of, it would be interesting to see how many we can come up with and if we agree.

a lot of people feel sequels or remakes are never as good as the original, not always but quite often this is true.

i will kick off with-

son of the mask. - terrible, after such a good first one. :no:

dumb and dumberer. - as above. technically a prequel, but it was the 2nd film spawned because the first was popular, so it counts.

blues brothers 2000. - not terrible, but pointless and silly after such an iconic first one.

-deuce bigelow european gigolo first one was quite funny at times, this was 'kin awful.

babe: pig in the city - took whatever was good and charming about the first one and shat on it. if i ever see this pig again i just hope its as pork chops or a bacon sandwich. :-|

the lost boys 2+3 - f**K off.

karate kid 4 (the next karate kid, not the 2010 remake) - see above. :slap:

dirty dancing 2 - really?

home alone 4 - just f***in' dont.

I'm not really a big film fan but my Christ I've seen some appalling remakes in my short film watching career.

The worst was the remake of horror chiller THE FOG, it was so bad I considered not returning it to the DVD shop as a moral duty to other movie fans. Nobody else should have been subjected to that!

The best was THE THING with Kurt Russell. That film is f*cking awesome!

yeah, the remake of the fog was terrible, why did they bother, the original wasnt great but this was a waste of time.

the thing was really good ( kurt russell has done some really good and cheesy good films). i remember my cousin making me watch it when i was about 10, the bit with the dog left me mentally scarred for life.

I did like the 1st one, some good moments.....the blue oyster gay bar bits, the little black fella who does all the sound effect, the well built blonde............... all became a bit tired quickly though......

the first one was definitely the best, i do really like 2, 3 and 4, after steve guttenberg left they went well downhill, 5 was watchable, but the last 2 are hard to watch.

mind you its probably more to do with nostalgia and they are what i watched growing up as to why i think those films are good, they are quite easy to just bung on the dvd/video and watch though.

quite a few disney sequels where they ,make a brilliant classic first one and years later they run out of ideas and try to do it again, but fail dismally - lady and the tramp 2, fox and the hound 2, lion king 3, jungle book 2 etc. :-|

My votes (just for starters, I'm sure I'll think of more later) are

The Day The Earth Stood Still (with Keanu Reeves). Absolute bilge. The original with Michael Rennie is a Sci Fi classic that won numerous awards and NO ONE should ever have been given permission to remake it.

Mean Machine (Vinnie Jones) Utter skid mark of a remake.

Only one sequel has been even close to being good, and that was Psycho, when a then 20 year older Anthony Hopkins starred as the 20 year older Norman Bates who was now 'cured' after time in an asylum. :-|

that was the top 5 films thread, i had a good read through it and there was a few points and bits about sequels and remakes. i did check right through for a thread like this.

you're right about mean machine that was awful. the longest yard which was another version was actually quite good, the weird bit though was burt reynolds being in it, adam sandler playing burts original role, and burt being sandlers sidekick.

psycho 2 was brilliant by the way, best of the 4, they were all good.

bad remakes =

the pink panther - i dont mind some steve martin stuff, but

willy wonka/charlie and the chocolate factory - usually johnny depp delivers, he wasnt to blame so much for this, but his weirdo director mate should not have touched it with a bargepole. :no:

Actually thought this version was a lot closer to the source material than the Gene Wilder version - I remember reading that Roald Dahl was not too happy with what they'd done with it. The Jonny Depp version has that slightly uncomfortable edge that most of Dahl's books had. I mean, the older was probably a better film, but adaptation-wise the more recent one did a better job.

some of the friday the 13th sequels were appalling films really, but they were so bad they were good. the acting was so hammy and bad, it made all of the cast of hollyoaks look like bafta candidates. i cant help liking these films, even though they are actually repetetive formulaic, $h1te.

likewise about the halloween's and the nightmare on elm streets. a couple of sequels were fine, but some were truly rancid.

i think the only reason that makes me or anyone who watches these tolerate them is more about the main character than the film itself.

the remake of friday the 13th was a mish mash of about 3 of the original films and it wasnt the same, even though the acting and effects are probably better, the same thing with nightmare on elm street, they changed a few things and tried to change it, it didnt have the same feel, atmosphere or likeability as the original few.

Really enjoyed the first Pirates of the Caribbean film,but each film since has got progressively worse.
Should have knocked on the head after The Curse of The Black Pearl, but the franchise still does well in the box office so they will keep churning them out,unfortunately.

i agree, the first one was brilliant, the second one was quite good, the last 2 were crap.

its only really johnny depp that carried the three sequels but even then the same old schtick was wearing thin.

its like i said about the friday the 13th's and nightmare on elm street's, you keep watching them although the films are trash because you like the character or want to see more of the character, the character can carry a terrible film (just).

but there will be another pirates of the carribbean soon, because as you said, they do well at the box office.

the film version of the saint starring val kilmer was awful, a truly dreadful experience. christ he has done some turkeys.

not strictly a remake of a film but a reboot of an old series of films made in the 30's and 40's.

then it was a series made in the 60's starring roger moore, then rebooted in the late 70's early 80's starring ian ogilvy. i liked the latter when i was a kid, i had a toy of his car. i didnt see the original 60's series.

there has been a few examples of making a really bad film based on an old series -

Paranormal Activity 2, 3 and 4. Yeah, fine it's a nice and pretty creepy idea for the first film but when you film it in the EXACT same style each time with relatively similar plots it just sucks massively.

just thought of another turkey that used to be a tv series but was turned into an abysmal film. sadly, again, following on from the pink panther entry earlier it is another effort by the usually reliable steve martin, SGT BILKO. oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, phil silvers must have been spinning in his grave.

the original series was actually called the phil silvers show, but we always called it bilko in our house because thats what it was and that is actually what the steve martin film was supposed to be.

well spit in my eye, i just found out the remake pink panther actually had a sequel , who did steve martin have to shag to get that one. how does one of the worst remakes ever get a sequel?

im not hammering steve martin by the way, some of his films have been quite funny and good.
