we're in a new southern section west, which makes complete sense at last, we're guaranteed a near neighbour, except wycombe and pompey are in our section!! at least they're trying i suppose, altho i'd have thought swapping newport and swindon (who both got byes) with wycombe and pompey wouldve made a lot more sense!

Bix, get yersen off t'pub lad yer sound like yer need a brew!! :na:
Why do 8 teams in the northern section get byes and 8 in the southern section get byes? Surely there are equal numbers of teams so that each club can have a first round game?

Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

No, for a competition to work you need it to halve each round, ie 1 winner, 2 in the final, then 4, 8, 16, 32 etc...
If you start with 48 teams, you would get 24, then 12, 6, 3 and then what? You need 16 byes, then you have the 16 winners and 16 byes making 32.

Thanks Gulli, I really didn't 'do the math' so to speak on that one!
I honestly didn't know that's how they worked it out. Is there a system that takes into account if a club has had lots of first round byes in the past and thus tries to even things out or is it as simple as if your name comes out of the hat as a bye then that's it?
