Best, Worst, and most important games of last season!

For me, the most important win of the season was our midweek victory over Chesterfield when our relegation to the BSP seemed to be a formality. The worst? Too many to choose from. The Best? I can't remember!

What do we all think?

I'd have to agree with you Duncan about the Chesterfield midweek game, if we had not have won that we'd have gone into the York game still seriously up sh*t creek and may not have won that one either so it was imperative for us to get that win.

The Morecambe away game was nearly as important as a loss even then doesn't bear thinking about.

In terms of games i went to then here goes:

I saw away games at Port Vale, Rotherham, Chesterfield, Fleetwood, Bradford, Accrington, Burton, Wycombe, Morecambe, Northampton and York. Apart from a really good half hour spell of domination and pressing against Burton i can honestly say that i didn't enjoy any of those games one bit in terms of entertainment. They were all truly dreadful but the worst game for me was Rochdale away under Taylor. What our players turned out that day was a criminal offence and when they went ahead in the first 20 minutes or so it was literally a feeling amonst the hardy 100 souls there that it was game over there and then and no matter how much faith we had we were beaten and weren't going to even attempt to get back into the game. We actually DEFENDED a 1 goal deficit. It was insane what was going on out there on the pitch but there was a sort of collective resignation that could be felt amongst us when Rochdale got their noses in front and it was a bit of an eerie feeling. Rochdale away 1-0 loss was the worst game i'd seen since the last away game i saw, that became the pattern. Truly dreadful.

The best? Well as i only went to one home game against Northampton when we let in an injury time leveller to draw 1-1 and all my away games were sh*t then i'd have to say that was the best as it wasn't a bad game, quite entertaining and i was at Plainmoor and thoroughly enjoyed myself so despite the result i'd say that game was the best i've seen this season.

How about Aldershot at home for worst, best and most important all in one game?

0 - 3 down 5 minutes into the second half - worst

4 - 3 win at the final whistle - best

Had we lost that game we would have been relegated and Shots would have survived - most important!

One of the worst games for team selection has to be Aldershot away under Taylor when we lost 1-0 . Taylor brings on morris for stevens and we go 1-0 down and for the rest of the game leaves Benyon on the bench. even Simon Baker commented that he could not beleive why Benyon didnt come on when we were chasing the game for a draw.
For an assistant manager it shows how totally clueless he was.

I only saw 8 games during the season and they fall into 3 categories; promising, just needs some small adjustments, dire and found some fight in the nick of time. Leicester City doesn't really count as they outclassed us but what was interesting/exciting was Thompson coming on and skinning Konchesky a couple of times. We played some good football against Cheltenham and Rochdale at home, significantly higher quality that the football we finished playing. I think Downes being sent off and Lathrope getting injured saw us lose a bit of momentum, which might have had more of an impact than we realise. The next game I saw was Morecambe, which we won 1-0 with Stevens scoring a very good goal. Nathan Craig played in central midfield and looked good. I thought I saw a player that in the future could run games from that position. Overall, by this point the team looked slightly dis-jointed and lacking in confidence but I felt that not much needed to change to bring them back to the levels I had seen at the beginning of the season. The next two games were Wycombe and Oxford. Despite taking the lead against Wycombe, we were dreadful and once they equalised the confidence drained away from us. Oxford did not deserve to beat us 0-3, but we were so fragile and lacking in energy, that they took what they were given. York were hit hard and early, the opposite of our approach against Oxford and we battle hard to hang on. The effort against Barnet was superb, in particular the way we pressed them; dynamism that was missing for most of the season, although the quality wasn't as high as the early season games. The atmosphere was as good as I've known it at Plainmoor, the crowd really roared the team home. Enough was done against Rovers and a lot has been written about it already

In addition, in that game at Rochdale where it couldn't get any lower Taylor left Benyon on the bench until about 80 odd minutes when up to that point we looked totally cluless and created zero. This was a few games in after we'd signed him after we were desperately crying out for a striker for about 4 months and they then didn't play him other than a late sub. F*cking clueless buffoons!!

The barnet game (3-2) is certainly up there as most important as those three points are the difference from us staying up to going down. Chesterfield is up there too- just to get the points rolling.

Probably Chesterfield,York,Barnet and Morecambe were equally the most important. All four were must win games and we managed to win them all.
It just goes to show though how close we came to being relegated - it really was too close for comfort.

The best game for me without doubt was Aldershot home, remember at half time not being able to explain how we were 2.0 behind and then to conceed a third so early in the second half just made you feel like going home, remember going nuts when we leveled it at 3.3 thinking we had nabbed an unlikely point, then goal number 4 goes in and we had won the game, long time since I had felt like that watching Torquay.

Every win was vital in the end including Aldershot, but think you have to look at the run-in for the most important, I could say Dagenham away, 1.0 and down to 10 men after 3mins, then to fall 2.1 behind late on to snatch a priceless point. I could say Morecambe away had we lost that game the team would have gone into the last game in the botton two and under all sorts of pressure.

The home wins over York and Barnet were simply massive, however the most important of the lot agreed was Chesterfield at home, we had just gone through a run of 8 straight defeats the club, players and fans were on our knees, that win gave everyone the lift, belief and confidence, and probably was the reason we went on to gain the points needed.

Opps sorry forgot the worst, can't say Aldershot away becuase I did not go, so for me it has to be Southend home, shocking all over the place, pathetic and many other words I will not put on a family site.

Best game I saw was Rochdale at home. Sadly things got a lot less exciting to watch (overall) after that game!

I had my ticket and was holed up in a holiday park near Tavistock eagerly awaiting this game and i got ill and had a sh*t holiday and couldn't make the game which is partly why i booked the bloody holiday so i could get to Plainmoor!!

I missed an all time classic!!!

It's funny that nobody has mentioned this game up to now. It was another dire performance but we nicked the penalty and hung on at the end, a familiar tactic. The result was much needed and was sandwiched either side of really poor results so it didn't really have the desired effect we all thought it would at the time and see us kick on. On top of that it was a win in our rivals back yard so all the more pleasurable.

Judging this only on the games I witnessed.

Best Game: Exeter away. Beating them in their own back yard. Brilliant.

Worst Game: Aldershot away: The less said about this game the better. Just thinking back to that match makes my blood boil.

Most important: Dagenham away: Since the City win, we only got 1 point from a possible 27. We were in free fall and after Downes got sent off, I feared the worst, but we fought back brilliantly and got a deserved point. We played better with 10 men than Dagenham did with 11. It was that game I got belief that we had what it took to stay up. If we lost that game, I think we might not have stayed up.

It seems that contributors have forgotten the dreadful 0-1 Cup defeat at Home by Harrogate Town. Bradford at home was dire, as were many others; the worst thing about the season was, as it progressed, you went to the game in a half-hearted manner, knowing it was going to be dire.
Next season, anything but boring terrible tedium, please. A regular attender will know instinctively why Ling got his marching orders.
