Attendance Figures

Post by Gulliball »

I have updated the main page with the attendance figures for this season. There's now a full (some figures are estimates as the home club didn't release an away figure) breakdown of home and away figures since our return to the league four years ago. If you ever feel the urge to see how many fans we took to Rochdale in 2009 (134 Gulls made the trip), this is the place to go.

The main page is here, with sub pages linked: http://www.torquayfans.com/attendances

The overview for the season just finished is:

Average Attendance

2009/10: 2856
2010/11: 2631
2011/12: 2869
2012/13: 2735

Slightly down on last season, as you might expect given the relative league position, but still pretty much bang on average since we returned to the league.

Average Home (eg Torquay) Fans

2009/10: 2482
2010/11: 2357
2011/12: 2509
2012/13: 2377

132 fewer home fans attended Plainmoor each game. Given the total drop on 2011/12 was 134, it was almost exclusively Torquay fans not attending this year.

Average Away Fans (At Plainmoor)

2009/10: 374
2010/11: 274
2011/12: 360
2012/13: 358

The difference between the figures - an average of 2 fewer away fans attended games at Plainmoor this year.

Average Torquay Away Followings (To Opposition Grounds)

2009/10: 266 (108 lower than the other way)
2010/11: 302 (28 higher than the other way)
2011/12: 448 (88 higher than the other way)
2012/13: 311 (47 lower than the other way)

Probably the most disappointing figure. Our average away following dropped by 137 fans per game despite the addition of Exeter as another Devon Derby. It saw us fall below the figure of how many opposing teams brought to Plainmoor (358 per game), having won this battle in the previous two seasons.
This put us 15th in League Two for away followings, sandwiched between Wycombe (14th with 318) and Rochdale (16th with 292)

Who Took More Fans to the Other’s Ground?

2009/10: Torquay 12, Opposition 11
2010/11: Torquay 13, Opposition 10
2011/12: Torquay 13, Opposition 10
2012/13: Torquay 13, Opposition 10

We did maintain the same result on a team-by-team basis however, and the figures for each season are very consistent. The main reason for the difference is that Bristol Rovers and Exeter in particular brought far more here than we managed at the reverse fixture. The circumstances didn't help us with this (Exeter was a Monday night and on TV, and Bristol Rovers was their last day of the season party). Those two figures were enough to adjust the total figure, but on the whole we still out-travelled the opposition team by team.

Highest Away Following at Plainmoor

2009/10: Notts County – 1600 (approx)
2010/11: Chesterfield – 1000 (approx)
2011/12: Plymouth – 1050
2012/13: Plymouth – 1541

Slightly harsh on Bristol Rovers who had 7 fewer official away fans but several hundred in the home ends, but the official figure counts, they were in the home ends that day.

Highest Away Following Taken to Opposition

2009/10: Bournemouth – 1200 (approx)
2010/11: Rotherham – 675
2011/12: Plymouth – 1938
2012/13: Plymouth – 1525

Down on last season, which was our first double over Plymouth in a long time, but still a very good away following. 16 more and it would have matched their following at Plainmoor.

Once again we took three figures to every away game (89 at Bury away in 2010/11 was our last sub-100 following) - a good achievement considering 6 teams brought less than 100 to games at Plainmoor this year.

However, we did have two home crowds below 2000 this year, something we didn't the previous year (2018 was the lowest). These were the Tuesday night games against Rotherham and Wycombe.

Player of the Season results will be announced later today when I have added up the data collected from the season.

Good work, Gulli.

Lets hope that the fixture computer is kind to us with games at City, Argyle, Rovers, Cheltenham and Pompey, and we can get back to pushing 450 for our average away following next season.
