I was there against Spurs at the Babbacombe End, aged 11. We were at the front. The fence collapsed and me and Mike Griffiths, my class mate from Tweenaway, ended up on the pitch with all the others. The replay was on my 12th birthday the 13th January. A wasted trip. Because I bunked off school the headmaster (Pinky Thomas) made me and about 40 other kids have detention and write 100 times 'I waste Time and Money'. Talk about rubbing salt in. We were warned if we went to the rearranged match we would be expelled. I was tempted but mum wouldn't let me go. An early lesson on the unfairness and harshness of life being a Torquay United supporter.

Floodlights were first used at Plainmoor in the same season as this FA Cup run, but when during the season I don't know.

Must have been the Saturday they played Leeds where the ground was open for updates....he bunked off school for the replay.
Why ? Was it to do with flood lights ???

That's right. I've just asked my dad , he said plainmoor was full and crowd were going nuts.

The Elland road tie was played on 8th January 1955 which was a Saturday.

wivel I was at the game with my late Dad who was a Liverpudlian.He rarely came to Plainmoor but even he was excited on that famous day.
A never to be forgotten day. I travelled by train to London for the replay and was on local TV (Westward TV?) as they filmed us getting on the train at Torquay Station.
10 minutes from White Heart Lane and a cloudburst caused the match to be postponed but I returned the following week to see us lose 5-1.
Everything about football has changed so much since those far off days.
If you think about it it is quite extraordinary.
No substitutes, no added time, no 4th official, no yellow or red cards, heavy leather balls,very different boots compared to today,no extra time in FA Cup games, different rules for Goalkeepers, 2-3-5 formation( 2 full backs, 2 wing halves with a centre half and 5 forwards!!)
I think I had better stop.

my dad went to both games, he travelled up to north london only for the game to be called off. he remembers jimmy greaves telling him to **** off back to devon, he's hated him ever since!!

Great memories, my first ever TUFC match standing with my father. I remember going on a supporters' coach for the replay at WHL. Great days!
