Generic comments from a generic striker. He's hit a purple patch and is the go to guy at a deeply ordinary club. Not a lot to see here. Every striker in the world thinks he'll score every time he walks on the pitch. Those who don't search for something to blame and lack of pitch time is a pretty good excuse. As it happens, not playing all too often didn't really seem to affect him too badly, but Ling was obsessed with 4-5-1 and wouldn't change his mind even when the world's fattest, least athletic adult male stopped hacking the ball into the net from the penalty spot and decided to wander about on the wing instead.
As for Knill, of 26 starts for Torquay, 12 of them came under Knill. During the summer, he was set to be offered a deal until he went to AK's office and informed him that York had made an offer of £x. Knilly knew we couldn't possibly match the terms mentioned, so he was out the door.
Across his career to the start of this season, he had 33 goals in 135 games (one in four), so his return at York of 6 in 10 is anomalous. I always liked him and he would have been a nice alternative, but let's not pretend we've sold Rooney for a song; Jarvis is an ordinary L2 striker who has hit some form, not the next Rickie Lambert.
Matt.
