Loan signing?

Argyle have one already, Reuben Reid, on a season-long loan from Yeovil.
It's not unusual, of course, for small clubs in the lower reaches of the Football League to sign players on loan from much bigger clubs in higher divisions, so Argyle is not breaking any new ground here ( =D ), but it's not so common for loan signings to be made before the season even starts. Made me wonder why a club would sign a player on loan at this time of year.
Is this desperation by Argyle, a sign, once more, of no money in the bank, or a clever and astute move on their part? Possibly both? Because Reid is a half-decent player and this is probably a good signing by Sheridan who probably thinks he would fit in well with his squad. But, presumably (I can't remember how this works) by having a loanee or two now or early season, a club would not be able to sign so many later, in which case this is something of a gamble by Argyle.
Would it benefit us if the Gulls signed a player on a season-long loan during the summer? I don't think so, even though we would be unlikely (or would we?) to find a player of Reid's ability on a free transfer, unless Knill has had his eyes open and moved in quickly for a real bargain (which is possible). But even if another Reuben Reid were to be available on loan now, surely it must be better for us to wait for the new year, then look at where the squad needs strengthening?
Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing who will be signing for the Gulls over the next month or two.
