What is needed ...

.... Is new blood.

The team is crying out for new blood to be added to the squad and has been for months now quite frankly.

Alan Knill deserved some time to get his feet under the table and assess things but that time has now passed due to the urgency of our predicament. The fact is, he has seen us in "live" action 3 times now and our deficiencies should be glaringly obvious. If he does need any further evidence then I'm sure he could pick up some back copies of match DVDs for the last 2 or 3 months and watch them if he really needs to!

By way of an example, John Sheridan down at Plymouth, brought in SEVEN new additions in his first FOUR weeks at the helm. In fairness, he added those to what was an already bloated and under-performing squad and at presumably considerable expense and that is pretty much where we are at now. Now some of those have worked, listen to Argyle fans and they would single out Branston and Banton, and some of them haven't and of course it's difficult to quantify what benefits in terms of points they may have brought to the team. But an easy one is Banton, who has scored three goals which have secured four points for his team. In a side that has struggled for goals all season that is quite possibly four points that they wouldn't have got without him.Similarly, Guy Branston has shorn up their defence and they are conceding precious few goals now, what value in terms of points that may have brought to the side is more difficult to quantify but a couple of clean sheets have certainly helped along the way and in seven starts they have only conceded more than 1 goal on just the one occasion, so well done to Branno (through gritted teeth!) :@

Looking at our squad, the stand out players ALL season, have been Poke, Saah, Downes, Mansell and Howe in my book ... albeit some, Howe in particular, aren't quite performing to the levels they were earlier in the season and others like Manse haven't hit the highs of last season. Based on current form, I also think both Leadbitter and Bodin have been bright sparks in our depressing run of form of late. So, it's the "other" positions we need to look at and the answers may not just lie in the existing squad, although it is a fair point to argue that some really haven't been given a fair crack of the whip.

In other words, I feel it is a bit more than the "fine tuning" that Alan Knill alluded to at he weekend. We need improvements to four key areas and that is Left Back/Left sided Centre half (Nico needs a rest and needs to be taken out of the firing line and the assumption must be that Cruise isn't good enough) I.e someone who can cover for Downes in the short term but maybe cover for Nico in the longer term, Central Midfield (sad to say as I like the guy, but Easton has been a huge disappointment this season and Lathrope just isn't delivering) a pacy right winger (despite having something like ten wingers at the club !) and a pacy, more direct striker ( I just don't see Benyon or Jarvis being the answer to what is needed now).

In all of this I hope Knill makes his own mind up, and quickly, on what he feels is needed rather than relying too heavily on what his back room staff are telling him as he has also alluded to. Loyalty is a great quality and without question it is probably one of Shaun Taylor's most endearing qualities and he has it in buckets (same for Kenny Veysey) but in certain situations it can be misplaced or even misguided and perhaps Shaun has been too loyal to the existing squad (after all his mate Lingy signed most of them) in his assessment of what he have got and what is needed in this situation.

I honestly think that FOUR quality additions could save us and I have some faith in Alan Knill finding them but let's face it, it won't be easy as we are hardly an attractive proposition just now. Any more than four would be excessive and wasteful and we are restricted anyway by the max number of loanees (five) allowed in any match day squad. We are fortunate in some ways that at the moment, unlike some clubs around us (such as Argyle) in that we only have two loanees (Elliot and Angus) on our books and so we have quite a bit of room to manoeuvre and surely the Board would support any such moves (to quote Simon Baker "we will do anything that is needed") at this critical stage to support the new man, as they are getting close to(if we haven't already) of having left it too late to act already,

Having said all that, personally I reckon we may see ONE, perhaps TWO at most in by Saturday. Not enough in my book and it may take another defeat on Saturday, or perhaps finally dropping into the bottom two before we add the two or three more new faces that are needed. It's just so frustrating that every week we delay, the matches and more importantly the points, are just slipping away. Action and decisive action at that, is what is needed now not in a few weeks time when the loan deadline finally closes and we are left with what we have got for the run in.

I would agree with most of that - with the exception being that we don't need a striker. I thought Benyon was excellent last night - we just need someone to pass him the ball. We all know what we need but is Knill really going to be able to morph four or five decent players out of thin air? - cannot see it myself.
A centre half is the most urgent requirement by saturday. I keep saying it but Baker should be on the phone to Zebroski today. I am not concerned that the bloke likes a drink but what an addition he would be at the moment.
Zebs and a decent center half for saturday would at least give us a lift.
My impresson is that the task will be beyond Knill though - really we are that bad.

Too late with Zebs I'm afraid, signed for Eastleigh on Monday and played for them last night in a 2-2 draw. It appears he scored twice as well, but both were disallowed!

Way too good for that level, paying the price for his stupidity unfortunately. 8/

Cruise has to come in, we have to give the guy a chance over an extended period. LRT should have been kept and he could be playing now but there we go, we got rid of him because he couldn't play centre half, then signed Cruise.....who can't play centre half. We need Downes fit because he's a solid stopper with a bit of experience, we should let Angus Wee Jock Poo Pong McPlop go back and find another Branston from somewhere.

Easton - NO FANKS, conversely I don't have an issue with Oastler playing central midfield, mainly because I think it's his best position. I've never seen him as a full back and he has all the positional sense of the Titanic, he's not the worst footballer and doesn't shirk a tackle so could be an option in the middle. Leadbitter showed exactly what we've been missing for years at full back at aldershot and should be persisted with from here on in. He'll make the odd mistake but will improve and has the raw skills to play there. We desperately need a Craig Stanley in the middle who can pass it but also do the gritty stuff alongside Mansell ideally. Nathan Zidane-Messi isn't the answer.

We need wide players of quality, we've not had a good right winger in 3/4 years and we need to find a loanee fast, so ultimately I'd say minimum of 3 but ideally 4 new players for now to get us 22nd place.

come the summer I'd like to see half of this squad minimum gone, a new manager, new ideas and new players.

I feel we need the following....

1 winger willing to get chalk on their boots.

Aaron downes to return-Angus has most of the pop side eating out his arse but he was terrible at best last night.

2 strikers so we can send Benyon back and have a player of use on our books. the other a big strong striker as knill can get the best out of them.

1 new set of fans that aren't the most fickle bunch of morons ever that stand and abuse players thinking its gonna help then expect us to have some devine right to be in the play offs and seem to think cruise Is the answer to all problems oblivious to the fact there is a reason why he has played a handful of games from the bench.

Also the reason why 3 managers rarely pick Nathan Zidane-Messi, the most over rated player in our history.

I think the situation's got far too serious for Nathan Craig to be relied on to save our dreadful midfield, we need a miraculous Danny Hollands or Craig Stanley-type signing now. That said, it's laughable Craig hasn't been given a chance in the middle, given our total inability to pass or create chances.

Lee Mansell and Damon Lathrope (for 70mins) were superb at Exeter, but that was the exception to the trend of our central midfield being the worst in the Football League. When I said Craig should play and that he's the best footballer and passer our CM options have to offer, believe me, it wasn't nearly as high a praise as you might think. Ling also seemed keen on him before wasting him on the left and before Taylor decided he wasn't needed in the matchday squad...

Concerned that Knill is saying on BBC that he wants experience brought in.

Forgive me if im wrong, but it is the youngsters who are showing the old boys up at the moment isn't it? Who would you say the form players are? Easton, Jarvis? They are not the solution I'm afraid and you just won't get creative centre midfielders (for you chunky? he he) with experience on loan.

I think we only need a couple of adjustments from last nights team and we will be much more attack minded. The disappointing thing is that the players appear to be within the squad!

Easton and Jarvis replaced with Craig and Macklin/Thompson. There you go, easy peasy.

Manse replaces Lathrope when he comes back and we are set.
Mmmmmm, beeeeeeeer.

No way Craig could play in a 4-4-2 as part of a 2 man central midfield which is seemingly the way Knill wants to go (right way as well), bloke is severely limited and being 'our best passer' is a bit like being the best Welsh tennis player.

I totally agree with CP GULL

There is no harmony within the squad, devoid of all confidence, something has been happening all season, they have lost it.

We require new blood and fast. You can debate all you like whether Thompson/Maklin/Danny ,Bodin or Gareth Bale should play in the wide areas, if you are not going to pass it to him, or give it to him with his back to the goal, they are not going to do it!! They are static, its useless. A wide player needs service, and balls behind the full back, its not happening and will not under the current squad.

We need creation in midfield. Elliot B is not the solution up front, i wish he was. I admire his williness and desire, considering his lack of recent match play hes doing as much as he can. However he's not a prolific goalscorer, never has been and we need goals and fast.

As I said before, we need that Hollands/Stanley player to come in, so we're actually in agreement (although on Welsh tennis players, I hear there are a couple of half decent Williams sisters! ;-) ).

Craig and Easton struggled in a 2-man central midfield partnership in the win at York, but I guess my point is Nathan Craig couldn't have done worse than those chosen ahead of him over the last couple of months. The defensive-minded Lathrope and industrious Easton and Mansell have hardly shielded the defence effectively, won any midfield battles or offered any attacking contributions whatsoever. At least Craig is capable of picking a pass, shooting from distance, whipping in inviting crosses and delivering a decent corner.

He hasn't done this enough and if he played central midfield then would barely do this at all. in the games i've seen he doesn't look strong enough, doesn't get involved in the game enough and I've not seen this range of passing which I hear about so often. It reminds me of Morris where he played the majority of the season on the wing, everyone said he wasn't good enough, then he's actually a centre midfielder, gets a few games there and still doesn't really do enough. Gets injured and now we really miss him. Craig and Morris have both become Championship players over the course of this season, it's ridiculous.

Even if Craig's natural position isn't out wide, if his set piece and actual delivery is so good he should still have been able to contribute effectively because he's in the natural position there to do it. He's scored 1 goal all season? Even that was a bit of a fluke and contributed 1 assist in 28 league starts. Dreadful.

This is in no way a pop at you, more i just don't get the hype surrounding this bloke. He's done nothing yet is referred to as Messi esque.
