Best and Worst League Club 2012

Post by Nick Potkins »

As tweeted by Lee Mansell, interesting.

I know we all knock the club from time to times...

Ah, statistics. They're great.

It looks nice but this table doesn't mean anything at all. We're not the 8th best league club in 2012. If anything that shows our mediocrity; good enough to be decent, but not good enough to get promoted (our average points would almost certainly had nosedived if we'd gone up)

I see that there is room for criticism, given that it takes into account promoted/relegated teams who are, perhaps, in inappropriate divisions, but otherwise, I think it's excellent analysis. It takes a constant (points awarded for a win, loss and draw) and allows teams banded by division (those of similar ability, budget etc) to rank against each other. It does require the reader to accept that the best team over a given period is the one which gains most points, but over the course of a calendar year, this is probably the case. I like it.
