Torquay United Legends

Hey guys, i'm creating a database on Football manager where i put in some of the best torquay players in it. I've put in some, but i was looking for your opinions on who you think are the best.

Another problem is that for people like Robin Stubbs (without a doubt in the database) i don't really know what stats to put for him. i.e. how quick/strong he is. So if you could suggest for the players from a while ago what they were good at etc.

Cheers! :)

Neville Southall, Mike Mahoney

Darren Moore, Matt Elliot

Alex Russell, Lee Sharpe, Kevin Hill, Alex Rusell, Jean-Pierre Simb, Chris Hargreaves

Robin Stubbs, Sammy Collins, Rodney Jack

They're the players I'd really love to manage. Not a full list as I'm not the oldest supporter on here to put it midly, but that would be a good start for me.

I'll make a special group for just you with any title and any colour you want if you include Jean-Pierre Simb  (and put the download link on here).

Don Mills and Dennis Penford are not included because I never saw them play. I did however have the good fortune of being coached by Don and Den when I was part of the Torquay United Colts team of the early 70s.

I ve missed out some great players/fans favourites either because I never saw them play or because I m having a senior moment right now and can t recall their names.

What an overused term legend is. On a related subject is it just me or do the words unbelievable and sensational get done to death by Shearer and Co on MOTD?

To qualify as a legend I would have thought you need to have been either a mainstay of the team over a lengthy period or, at a push, a precocious talent sold on.

My list would include;

Robin Stubbs
Mick Mahoney and Handy Andy
Phil Sandercock
Alex Russell and David Graham
Lors
Wes Saunders and Matthew Elliot
Paul Dobson and Dave Caldwell
Phil Lloyd
Steve Woods
Chris Hargreaves

Lee Sharpe and Rodney Jack

Edit
I forgot Hilly

In my view a true legend must be a long serving player at least 5 years and preferably more.

Sammy Collins - Scored 219 goals in 379 appearances scoring 40 goals in 1955/56. Sammy was a wonderful header of the ball and his goal scoring records still stand today. Not very big but a joy to watch.

Robin Stubbs - I was lucky enough to see Robin in his prime and I have no doubt he was the best all round striker ever to play for the club. He was strong, fast, good technique and a nightmare to defend against.

Don Mills - Don was probably the classiest player that I ever saw. He was way better than our level and was also an exceptionally nice guy. He played for the club for 10 years, retiring in 1961.

Denis Lewis - Held the club appearance record until broken by Kevin Hill. Played 474 times for United at No 4. Good on the ball, never panicked and a key player for many years.

Tommy Northcott - A very good centre forward, very strong in the air, always gave 100% and I remember him so well.

Kevin Hill - If all professional footballers were like Kevin the game would enjoy a much better reputation. A really genuine player who always gave 100% just like Lee Mansell.

The funniest player was John Bond, ex West Ham, who played left back and was known as the Muffin Man. Can anyone tell me why?

The most entertaining for two or three years was Larry Baxter a right winger who could beat four men but would always want to beat a fifth. What a player I just loved watching him in the 1950s.

I hope this helps FMTorquay but sorry for the younger fans if I go back rather a long way!

I kept my list to players from my era.

And yes, I too forgot Kevin Hill, among some other great players.
