United slipped to defeat on Saturday, as Billericay ran out clear winners at New Lodge.
Macauley Bonne’s early goal gave the hosts the lead, and with Town building on that with further strikes from Callum Watts and Jon Benton either side of the break, it was soon clear that The Gulls would be leaving Essex empty-handed.
Boss Jimmy Ball made three changes to the side that ran out 6-1 winners over AFC Stoneham last weekend, with Tyler Hill, Dan Hayfield and Matt Jay replaced by Matt Worthington, Caleb Roberts and new signing Luke Browne.
United fell behind with just over three minutes on the clock.
Having already threatened on a couple of occasions, Jon Benton’s hopeful ball across the six-yard box was deflected past Gulls goalkeeper Toby Savin, with Bonne adjudged to have got the decisive close-range touch.
United initially responded well – without testing home goalkeeper Joe Wright it must be said – before Town grabbed their second goal just before the half-hour.
Having won a corner, a United header away lacked the required distance, and only served to present Watts with a sight of goal, with the Billericay man duly firing a volley past Savin from the edge of the box.
Ball’s men enjoyed plenty of possession during remainder of the half, with Tegan Finn going close to reducing the arrears, as Wright did well to parry the firm left-footer round his near post.
0-2 at the break.
Torquay showed plenty of spirit following the restart, but when another deflection helped Billericay extend their lead in the 69th minute, it summed up a bad day at the office for the travelling Gulls.
Benton’s shot from just inside the the right corner of the penalty area may have tested Savin anyway, but with Kian Jenkins’ boot diverting it away from him, a 0-3 deficit left Ball’s side with a proverbial mountain to climb.
In fairness to The Gulls, the men in yellow kept going in pursuit of something, with substitute Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Jacob Beaumont-Clark and Isaac Westendorf all threatening in the latter stages, without finding the finishing touch.
The final word must go to the Yellow Army, who cheered their team on with passion for the full 90 minutes. Thank you, one and all.
