A Guide To Using Quotes

Thought I'd post this on here as it'll get the most views and will hopefully mean SG doesn't have to spend most of his free time fixing people's quotes!

The quote boxes use a simple forum code writing language called BBCode, this was developed around 12 years ago and was designed to be simple to use and allow pretty much anyone to use it. It is pretty much exactly the same as a code writing language known as HTML (HyperText Markup Language), but has been made simpler in certain areas.

Here are some examples of quotes and I will explain the code used underneath them.
I love men
[ quote]I love men[/quote ] - spaces added so it shows the code, there does not need to be any spaces at all. (Apart from between the words you're quoting)
Ferrarilover wrote:I love men
[ quote="Ferrarilover"]I love men[/quote ] - this is used for quoting a specific forum member. In this case, we know Matt does not love men and the quote is a lie. He loves fat chicks.

Here's the key part:-

When quoting using the little quote button above someone's post, it will bring up the quote ready to go. Unless you intend to edit anything within the quote (remove paragraphs/sentences to refer to a single point only or change the text in an hilarious, comedic way) you should not have to go anywhere near the quote.

Once any changes are made, click to the right hand side of the final [ /quote ] box and then press return/enter twice. DO NOT START TYPING YOUR POST BEFORE
[ /quote ] . This should bring you down a couple lines allowing there to be a nice gap underneath the quote box and will make your post look much cleaner and easier to read.

An example post will look something like this:-

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ferrarilover wrote:Cambgull is the most amazing person in history, far outweighing the knowledge of Stephen Hawking, Einstein and Newton put together and also has the dazzling good looks of the finest Hollywood actors
Awww shucks, thanks Matt. Finally we have a reason for your gay orange hairdressermobile!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps, if you have any questions, feel free to reply. There is definitely no excuse for a b*ggered up quote now!

Mod edit: to bring an otherwise very worthy and amusing post back the right side of the line.

No, a completely unlovable cock! If I had my way, you'd be attacked by sharks with frickin' """lasers""" on their heads!

Since you seem to know about it, how do I do multiple quotes, like Dave sometimes does?

Matt.

Charming!
Do you
or
Do you mean a quote
with another one below it?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[ quote]Do you [ quote]mean a [ quote]quote within a quote[ /quote][ /quote][ /quote]

or

[ quote]Do you mean a quote[ /quote]

[ quote]with another one below it?[ /quote]

I see, I have to put in my own [quote] things, do I? Can't be hard. I figured it relied on pushing the button.

Matt.

Yeah and there's no need to quote whole posts if only commenting on one part of that post... Remove the rest from the quote.

No problem Westbay.

Like the previous posts, I have added in spaces so the code will show.

Essentially, every quote must start with [ quote] and end with [ /quote]. If there are 3 quotes (which is the maximum times you can quote within a quote (not sure what the limit on quotes in general is).

There are then two ways of multiple quotes. Firstly, there is are "quotes within quotes" and then there are "seperate quotes". Quotes within quotes are for conversations where people have replied to each other. Seperate quotes are for when there are multiple statements which aren't replies to each other but are relevant to your post.

I'll show you an example of quotes within quotes and I'll colour code them which will hopefully show each quote easier.

[ quote] What's your favourite colour? [ quote] I like blue [ quote] I like blue too, but I prefer green [ /quote] [ /quote] [ /quote]

So the red one is the original quote, then within that, you have the quote from the person who replied to them and the person who replied to the reply.

This will look something like this:-
What's your favourite colour?
We then move onto "seperate quotes".

These are much simpler! They are the exact same as individual quotes, except they happen more than once!

[ quote] I like cheese [ /quote]

[ quote] The weather is lovely today [ /quote]

[ quote] I need to give up smoking [ /quote]

Well then wait for a rainy day so you wouldn't want to go outside, gorge yourself on cheese when you want a cigarette and you'll all be fine!

---------------------------------
I like cheese

I need to give up smoking

---------------------------------

Hope this helps. :-D
