United Begin Tough Trio With Visit Of Forest Green Torquay United can move closer to the South West Regional Women’s Premier League leaders this weekend, as Forest Green Rovers visit South Devon College on Sunday. This is one of United’s three games in hand on Marine Academy Plymouth, who they visit in a week’s time. Before then, Torquay need the type of thoroughly professional performance they turned in to win 3-0 in the earlier meeting of these two at Hartpury University, back in October. If they can produce similar back on the synthetic surface they like in Paignton, they’ll move to within five points of M.A.P. with two in hand, ahead of next week’s meeting. Forest Green started the season as one of the title favourites, alongside United, M.A.P. and Sherborne, and they’ve generally lived up to that billing. But they fell away, either side of Christmas, held to draws by Ilminster Town and Pucklechurch Sports Ladies and losing to Sherborne and, perhaps surprisingly, AEK Boco Ladies. Defeat to the leaders effectively ended their title hopes in March. They remain, though, the only side to inflict defeat on the league leaders, and that was an away win in Plymouth, so United under-estimate Rovers at their peril. They don’t boast a high scorer but do have goals from several players this season. Erin Williams leads the way with nine, followed by Rhiann Robbins

, Tyra Wilson (5), and Katie Jones and Victoria Taylor, who have both netted four times. United eased to a comfortable 2-0 win at Ilminster Town Ladies on their last outing a fortnight ago. That’s now eight league wins in a row since the narrow reverse to M.A.P in January, and perhaps, more importantly, three consecutive clean sheets. Lucy Solloway continues to lead Torquay scorers with 19, two behind the current league leading scorer, Sherborne’s Chloe Snook. It would be great to see some of the 250+ who witnessed the Plainmoor victory on Mother’s Day down at South Devon College on Sunday. This is a vital one of Torquay’s games in hand on M.A.P. and if you can make it, your support can make a difference!
