United are on the road again on Tuesday, as they head to Wiltshire to take on Chippenham Town at Hardenhuish Park. Having picked up points from back-to-back draws at Weston-super-Mare and home to Boreham Wood, Paul Wotton’s side will be hoping to record a valuable victory tomorrow to strengthen their promotion credentials. Who’s The Boss
Gary Horgan initially joined the Bluebirds as a player from rivals Hungerford Town in 2016, before making the step up into the coaching ranks the following year. With previous incumbent Mike Cook departing Hardenhuish Park during the latter stages of 2021/22, it was Horgan that steadied the ship and lead the Club to the highest finish in their 149-year history. A 7th place finish sealed a place in the National League South play-offs. A penalty-shoot win over Dartford raised hopes of a rise to non-League’s top tier, before their participation in post-season action ended by way of a 1-0 defeat at Ebbsfleet in the semi finals. Horgan led Chippenham to 12th position in the National League South last season as they finished with 62 points. How Have They Been Doing? Jac Poffley’s injury-time leveller came to The Bluebird’s rescue on at the weekend, as Horgan’s men came from behind to draw with draw specialists St Albans. That point further emphasised an inconsistent season so far for Chippenham, with their 36 outings being made up of 12 wins, 12 draws and – you’ve guessed it – 12 defeats. Town are 13 points off the play-offs, but 15 from the relegation places – standing firmly in a mid-table of 12th. Player To Watch
Forward Will Dawes has proved a useful signing for The Bluebirds since joining from Yeovil at the beginning of this season. Dawes was a part of The Glovers’ 2023/24 promotion-winning side after joining from Stratford Town. He scored the goal that took Stratford Town into the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history. Played For Both
Gulls forward Jordan Young – who grabbed the opener on Saturday represented Chippenham with distinction, firstly on loan, and then permanently in 2022. His eye-catching form prompted a move to Yeovil Town, where he went on to gain a National League South winners medal, prior to his switch to Plainmoor earlier this season. Previous Encounter
Chippenham 1 – 1 United National League South, Tuesday 23rd January 2024 Ten-man United came away from Wiltshire with a hard-earned point just over twelve months ago, as they drew 1-1 with the Bluebirds on their last visit to Hardenhuish Park. Will Jenkins Davies’ first-half opener gave his side a lead they deserved, however after the same player was dismissed in the second period, Chippenham managed to secure a share of the points thanks to Matt McClure’s leveller.
