Same here Westie. Great story but like my posts, took about 10 years to tell it.

Boring as hell show though. Great to have on in the background at bedtime when sleepy. Christ knows how anyone can listen to that.

Clubcall was great though. Cost my parents a fortune it did.

Thank you for this, it brought a smile to my face. Great story. And a reminder of a man who gave all Gulls fans something to smile about and cheer for. I thought Justin Fashanu was a star, a fine player for the Gulls and a great personality. What a sad day when we found out he had taken his own life. I found out on the way back from the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion at Leyton Orient, a game where Gulls fans were cruelly taunted by Paul Raynor, now Assistant Head of Cheating at Peterborough.

I was chatting to Hakan Hayrettin last night about the very man.......

'Hak' joined us on loan from Barry Fry's Barnet in January 1993, and played under no less than four different managers* before the end of the season by which time he had moved on to join Wycombe Wanderers that season as they too won the Conference. He also played in their FA Trophy winning side and then signed for them permanently.

He was at the Aveley v Haringey Borough match (that I went to last night) with Terry Harris who is my son's assistant manager at Boreham Wood and they both worked together with John Still in bringing Luton Town into the Football League. Terry loves my son as a footballer and a person, but just wishes he didn't drive him so bloody mad as most teenaged players do to management!

Another player like that is Toby Ajala who Hak discovered and started him on the road to the professional game with Waltham Forest FC. The last time I saw Toby he was at Dartford with Duane Ofori-Acheampong, but being 'AJ' he soon moved on again being the wandering soul that he is and this season he has so far played for Dartford, Thamesmead Town, Harlow Town and now Kingstonian!

*Can you name those four managers?

0898 12 16 41 if I recall correctly, was the number, I used to be the Night fill manager at a local supermarket, so the only way to get the results was use the office phone ( very regularly ) I can confess now as the firm are no longer in existence after being taken over by co operative stores & I left 21 years ago to do something completely different.

Well he said it was Paul Compton, Justin Fashanu and Neil Warnock and I can't remember the other one........it wasn't Eddie May or Don O'Riorden

I thought Neil Warnock came in as an advisor to Paul compton then stepped up when Paul compton was sacked. Don't remember Justin fashanu managing us. I remember bet lynch turning heads in the grandstand though. But it's a while ago and in my defence I was living in Israel for most of that season.

I think Justin was made an assistant manager under Golec and temporarily stood up when Golec left.

Yes that's how it was, so it must have been Justin who signed Hakan; succeeded by Comps, and then Warnock but he did say 'four' but we were talking more about young players to be found and I didn't really pay it so much attention.........maybe it was Golac but it was almost certainly Justin who did the deal with Barry Fry.

The real point behind all this though is the number of people who diligently screen that level of football for un-polished diamonds, players who have slipped through the net or dropped out of academy football and the sheer number of them in the Isthmian League and just below. Hence; clubs like Dagenham, Boreham Wood and Fry's Peterborough are always well represented at so any of these games; Colchester United too are another intense screener of non league talent.

I know of another very good defender ~ as good as, and more reliable than Gowling ~ who recently turned down full-time pro' at Dagenham (before their crisis broke) because he could just not make a financial case to his missus (they have two kids too) for chucking in his job and going full-time...in the event, he made the right decision didn't he!
