I was more than a tad worried who was going to be capable of holding the ball up front with out Tomlin, not now, with the addition of Rene Howe,to go with Olnjick,Saah,McPhee.not forgetting there is likely to be atleast two more,we now look to have a squad more than capable of competeing in league 2 ,and thats what it all about for next season.
I think Rene Howe could do a decent job in League 2.
Do not expect him to score goals, Have a good first touch, To win headers, beat players, or bring others into play.
But he will work hard for the team, chase down seemingly lost causes, win free kicks, and be a nuisance to the opposition defence.
Like others have said, if he played up top with a guy with pace, then it could be a good forward line, but if he is the main man then it wouldn't be good.
He certainly works his socks off though, and you cannot fault his endeavour.
My first reaction to this signing is that he is in no way a replacement for Chris Zebroski. He was on loan to us last season and I saw every game he played. I agree with the description of powerful and he is athletic ie it was amazing that he could run around so much with the weight he was carrying. We played him up front on his own or with Hoskins but the problem was basically that he is not a natural finisher and has no pace whatsoever. i am surprised he is 6ft 2" as described by martin Ling. I can tell you he does not look 6ft 2"" although he did win his share of the headers when the ball was played up to him. He scored 1 goal for us in about eight games and did not really look like scoring any more. Obviously sometimes a move just works out for a player and he clicks. i hope very much this happens for you as long as its not against us!!! I would have said it is not going to be agood thing to bank all your goalscoring hopes on Rene Howe.In all honesty I will be very surprised if he gets anywhere near double figures though you might find that he makes room for anyone who plays up front with him. It will be very interesting to see his progress with you.Is he playing tonight? I am not trying to put anyone off. This is just my honest assessment from what I saw of him last season. I too was very hopeful when he signed but whilst he gave everything he actually achieved very little.
In all fairness to these gas fans that are contributing to this discussion, fairplay, and thank you for the honest assesment of a player we've signed. Some rovers fans could take a lesson from you on how to conduct yourself on an opposition team's forum.
Could be an interesting one, i was intially very pleased with the capture but coming on here seems to have lowered my expectations. At least he is a hard worker, something i think we lacked some of in the forward department after benners left. Would be interesting to know from the rovers fans if he liked to drop deep to get the ball or if he stayed higher up the pitch to win headers and dictate play from there?
To be honest what he did was basically stayed up front because generally he was the only one up there!! We didnt exactly go out to entertain so that was his job but he covered the whole frontline ie I would best describe him as a "willing worker".I would never fault the blokes effort which I can tell you was a lot more than some of the more talented players we had. I note some Rovers fans on here have said he was no good in the air but that is not true.He won more than his fair share of headers but I just cannot believe he is 6ft 2" and if somebody had asked me I would have said about 5ft 9 but very stronly built but little to no pace. it will be interesting to hear what you think of him as the season progresses. He is commited thats for sure but is he a Zebroski? From the 2 occasions I have seen Zeb and from the highlights on your Player I would say "Not in a million years".

Hi, not sure why you keep banging on about Zebs like he is a world beater. Rene has obviously been signed as a battering ram for us to win headers and hold the ball up, so some of our more talented players like Okane and Key can play off him. something which Zeb cannot do, they are completly different types of player by the sound of it, add to that Zeb is a right midfielder about 90% of the time and not a striker.
Everybody has a photographic memory, some people just dont have film.

To be fair Ling made the comparison not the Gas fans.
Correct ritchinns. He IS without doubt a completely different player to Zeb. i can only tell you how he played for us and IMO he is nowhere near the player zeb is. Compared to Renee Howe IMO Zeb is a world beater but that is just my honest opinion. He may turn out to do an excellent job for you. Based on his effort alone I hope he has a good career with you because he was a damn nice bloke thrown in at the deep end into an abysmal team that needed goals which he couldnt provide!
After reading the reports from Gas fans I can think of one good point above all those made by themselves, they saw the player in League 1, we've signed him to play in League 2 so because of that major factor I say thanks for your input but I'll reserve judgement until I've seen him play at our level.

I have however seen him play in League 2, and he was not great, even in a good team.
Does work hard though, and he's not quite as slow as people are making out. Possibly as was eluded to earlier, he wasn't match fit at Rovers but he's quicker than Kee comfortably.
EDIT:
This was from a few years ago though..
