I wouldn't get too carried away with this signing as from what I have seen of him being a Melbourne Victory supporter that he tends to be a liability at the back and can get caught with the ball at times and hasn't got the speed to get back and defend after losing the ball that's why he only played three games for Victory last year before being released.
I hope he does well for us, but only time will tell.

I don't see this as being a significant problem - I've probably not watched as much of you, but from what I've seen of the A-League on BT Sports it seems to be at a level comparable to bottom end of Championship to middle of L1. Certainly, when British players go over there that seems to be the sort of level that fits in. For a young player to play at that level but perhaps struggle a bit would still make him OK for our level. If we were signing someone who had appeared at Champ/L1 level here we'd be OK with it

Actually Wivel - Giancarlo is Reg Wyatt's great-grandson, twice removed ...... ;-) Good luck to Whitby this afternoon. Wins for the Gulls and Whitby (what's Whitby's nickname, by th way?) to start the season.

You have obviously seen him play? I haven't. But I have to say that most, if not all, of the many comments from Victory fans about him on Twitter are very positive. They say he wasn't given a proper chance in his only season, and only played 3 games as you say. Harsh to judge a young player on 3 games!

:goodpost:

Exactly what I thought although the same argument could be used for Huth.

Agree about Huth Dave. One game only. Nicho has to judge young players to some extent on their history, as well as on their hunger to join the club. We (hopefully) will be signing a player who was good enough for Spurs & Swansea, let alone the Australia under 23 team. I am optimistic that he will do well for us.

If he is cleared to play and fit then I would start him on Tuesday. I'm sure both our centre backs tried their best but they were found wanting far too often.

If Robba signed a few weeks ago and is still unable to play then it's not hugely positive for Giancarlo to play on Tuesday. Hopefully it doesn't drag on as we're already short at the back and the games are thick and fast in the opening month.

Looked a useful addition, comfortable on the ball and can pass out from the back, a rare commodity at this level, even if his heading was a bit all over the place, but hey, sure we can forgive him for that.
