it was sung at Sixfields......
awesome! im really glad to hear that.

from what i have experienced, heard about, read about in the paper or on here, our away support is fantastic and brilliant, they never shut up through the whole match. at away matches it is understandable that the fans really get behind the team, show their support and represent.

its just a shame we cant generate that same enthusiasm at home matches.
You are my torquay, my only torquay, you make me happy when skies are grey, you'll never know, just, how much i love you, so don't take my torquay away.

The thing is, that group in the middle have tried to make out they are something special with creating an atmosphere, yet they hardly sing, and alienate other fans by chanting nonsense. When I was a lad and made it more often, it was the atmosphere and banter near the half way line was the reason I went. It used to be great fun. Anyone could start a song, and everyone else would join in. It doesnt seem this way anymore. Sad times

indeed, the atmosphere near halfway was what it was all about, my dad wouldnt let me go there for my first few years, but as a young lad once you get there its like a coming of age, you were one of the lads, in with the big boys, one of the popsiders. ;-)

the thing is there were blokes in there as well who were a fair bit older. we all got on, we all sang, chanted and bantered, bit too much pushing at times when we scored (pasties, mars bars and cups of tea lost many times), but we were generally well behaved and honestly even if the team were playing badly we hardly ever shut up or stopped singing.

and we had a bigger range of songs! :na:

The last bit chunky is a massive issue. I think this is a case of fans coming up with good songs and ditties but they don't want to be the ones to start them and so they just fall by the wayside. I've seen many a cracking effort on the yellow army thread and it would be a big help if any of the usual singers would post new songs that they were planning to sing on here before the games and then fans like myself could just simply join in once I knew what they were singing.
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

i think it's about time that John Bartlett brought his bell back into Plainmoor and zap up the atmosphere, just like it was in the 70s and 80s.. :O

That bell was excellent at Home Park two years back but it would get on my nerves at every home game.

As for atmosphere, I wasn't there yesterday but it seems the current 'fanatics' are happier singing about Joe Barlow than they are TUFC..

Away games are much funner and better, unfortunately.

I stand back step near the fanatics flag just across the steps in the block to the left of this group, before the game even started said some friends , the atmosphere is going to bad today.

The reason as I have already posted, looked across and the lads who atleast try to get some songs going, were not there, quite a few familiar faces seemed to missing.

i cant speak for the 70's, only the late 80's onwards, it may be the rose tints on, but usually the atmosphere generated by the pop was pretty good, like i said as a young buck you looked at it from the old grandstand and wanted to be over there.

there have been different eras the atmosphere was pretty damn good and yes they were pretty much all the times we have been doing well, but the support of the crowd does play a part in helping the team.

other than late 80's and early 90's the 97/98 season had some great days, culminating in the play off 2nd leg v scarborough, that was awesome.

and even for a few dodgy years after that we had a good atmosphere, a game with neville southall in goal springs to mind, im sure in one game he saved 2 penalties and had a stormer, when he jogged over towards the pop to retrieve a ball they were all doing the  , he waved and the crowd erupted.

one game in 03/04 really stands out, it was a wintery saturday afternoon, the rain was hammering it down, the winter darkness descended upon us early, the pitch was cutting up bad, but we still kept trying to play our brand of football, the pop on that day were fantastic, we won a really hard fought game, the players came over and applauded, the pop were singing, applauding and having a ball. nobody was leaving early.

the rain was still lashing down, then, over came leroy, arms aloft, the place was just becoming unglued, a couple of fist pumps from leroy, then he applauded the fans, the gulls were riding high in the league, and you could sense we might be on the verge of something special, everybody gave a couple of  chants of "leroy, leroy" rang out, then the pop went absolutely bonkers, i have never known an atmosphere like that moment at plainmoor, it was electric. brrr, gives me chills now.

as for bartletts bell, yes its ok occasionally but it does get on your t1ts after a while. i remember when there was the kerfuffle on the pop and the bell got thrown by the pitch. didnt he get a long ban for that, and the bell got banished forever.

So far I have been to the home game against Wimbledon and the away game at Northampton. In my opinion and based on those two fixtures, the atmosphere was tons better at Northampton.

We got most of the fans in the away end to stand up if they loved Torquay. Plus a lot of the chants were focused on Torquay United and not certain individuals.

I would like to start chants more but my voice has a horrible tendency to go all croaky after about 5 mins, so I kind of try to join in when others start.

From the family stand, you can hear the popsiders clearly in the middle so location isn't an issue.

Honestly, focus more on singing about the team and hopefully more people will join in. I noticed that the yellow army chant spreads through all the stands during the game.

For me though, I prefer away fixtures to home ones in terms of creating an atmosphere.

For a moment there when I read the thread title, I thought Russ Abbott was making a pop comeback. :'(

I was at the Oxford game earlier in the season and sat in the Bench directly across from the so called, "Fanatics". I have to say, the support was just non-existent. I tried to start a couple songs from my side and it generally fell on deaf (literally, in some cases) ears or maybe got about 3 people singing. The singing needs to be lead from the Popside as most of the vocal fans are over there yet no one wants to do it. In the couple times I've been over there, I've started a couple songs but generally I find I'm the first AND the last one singing as our fans seem to be completely incapable of keeping a chant going for more than one time round. It really is poor. Whoever put up the Fanatics banner, please take it down, it's false advertising and we might get sued.
Luke.
