the nicholson arguement is a non starter. the fact people will take a punt on cruise after his only contribution at plainmoor was messing up for Carlisle.

Eh? Carlisle are in League 1 and Wayne Carlisle retired so which one are you referring to?....................
If the manager deemed Cruise a worthwhile signing and Nicholson dips in form then I don't see Cruise coming in as a non-starter. The fact that you and brucie don't rate him is more of a glowing reference than anything I could come up with
Lanky Ben please let me enlighten you. Because a player has sat in the wings waiting for his opportunity it does not make him a bad player. The history of the Tom cruise deal is that he is a very very talented player, you don't play for arsenal in the champions league only 3 years ago if your a dud. The lad had a career threatening injury at arsenal and was out for 18 months. Arsenal then released him which shows the loyalty in the game. When I spoke to Martin after a game he said he took a punt on cruise to see if he could regain fitness etc and if he did we have a fantastic player on our hands. Out of loyalty to nicho who is a club ledgend cruise has had to bide he's time but have no doubt in your mind if you speak to any of the squad Tom Cruise is a player, and I think next season will see the emergence of him as first choice left back. As everyone knows nicho has hardly set the world alight and next year he will be 34.
Lankyben find it strange you joined the forum in Oct 2011 yet only started using as a regular now, sure your not a creation of Matt, Farrarilover ??? :ping:
If not lets to try to help you understand the forum again, everyone is allowed to share their views, voice opinions, users are allowed to dissagree it's normaly not personal, although I will say there is no need to belittle or put some one down because of their views or the way they go about expressing them.
Again you were/are happy for people to knock Mansell, yet in your world nobody is allowed to critize Nicho and sent to the tower they should be if they dare do such a thing. In your eyes Nicho can do no wrong, in other peoples eyes Manse can do no wrong, it's just the way it is.
He showed glimpses last season that he was finally acquiring a footballer’s brain. Sadly it appears to have been a temporary illusion.

He's referring to the FA Cup game vs Carlisle in January 2011 when Cruise slipped onto his backside in the opening minutes, allowing Eunan to score the winner.
I have nothing against Cruise, but his 15 minute showing at home to Rochdale was, as Brucie suggested, one of the worst performances I've ever seen from a professional footballer. He was all over the place. I've barely seen him on the pitch since, which is staggering given Nicholson's form. We need a genuine contender or even successor to Nicho next season, and as yet TC has done very little to convince me he's the man to step up.

Thanks for clearing that up but rather than go on a 15 minute cameo to judge a player I'd rather use the opinions of players who train with him on a daily basis and that tells me he's got a bright future if he can regain full match fitness.

The reason I'm having to judge him on a 15 minute appearance is because he has barely featured, bar a few pre-season and reserve games I've attended. This despite Nicholson being poor. Of course there is no way for him to get match fit without playing matches, nor is there really room in the budget for a player to spend a season just training and re-adjusting to the rigours of professional football after a lengthy injury. As I've said, though, I have nothing against Cruise, and I hope he proves his fellow players who rate him so highly right.
In fairness to Cruise, that 15 minutes against Rochdale was at Right back after Downes got sent off. Inexplicably Ling decided Oastler could do a job as right sides centre half, so as poor as he was I don't think you can push all the blame to Cruises door.
Nobody has said your views are belittling, they're just being disagreed with. Nico's form has been so poor along with a number of other players and sometimes a player needs to be dropped in order to recover confidence/form. I actually thought he did ok in patches the other night and Mansell did better than recently too. Perhaps the Captain benefitted from a rest and maybe Nico would too. It's all conjecture anyway as the man who makes these decisions has stuck by Nico solidly all season.
So you rate Cruise as a decent player - on what evidence is that then. When Cruise played in that cup tie against Carlisle he was nothing short of a liability. Didn't he get subbed after about half an hour? he was that bad.
When he came on against Rochdale he was absolutely appalling - he looked like a bloke who had been dragged out the crowd to make up the numbers he was that bad.
So on the evidence of what I have seen (and admittedly thats not very much) he doesn't look like a pro footballer to me.
A clue might be that Ling never plays him - so I take it he doesn't think he is much cop.
Anyway Cruise doesn't win the worst peformance of the season - he is the runner up. That award goes to Rice who threw three in his own net v Southend.
So my assessment of the worst player? god thats difficult - you could probably take your pick.
Rice - Worse than useless
Cruise - useless - but comedy value on that Rochdale peformance
Stevens- disinterested,lazy, close to useless.
Easton - waste of space
Oastler - Catain cock up - been making mistakes all season - why can't Leadbitter get a game.
Laffrope - overrated - average.
Macdougall - not seem much of him but on the Wimbledon effort - poor.
Halpin - been around for ages - hasn't shown anything.
So there are eight players who we could probably do without for starters.
