So no you don't need to have been an ex professional keeper to make a good keeper coach. If you look at elite goalkeeping in England right now, it's never been stronger; Pickford, Pope, Henderson, Johnson and Ramsdale and has the England team ever had 5 keepers all capable of taking the number 1 shirt.
You have to go back to the days of Walter Winterbottom and Alf Ramsey when England managers were given years to develop the squads. For example under the Ramsey era you had between 66/70 Gordon Banks (Stoke) Peter Bonetti (Chelsea) Alex Stepney (Man Utd) Gordon West (Everton) Tony Waiters (Blackpool). All top class goalkeepers. Although I admit with the influx of overseas goalkeepers in the modern game it is much more difficult to achieve today.
