We are and have been pretty much throughout our history, a BANG AVERAGE 4TH DIVISION CLUB. We don't sack managers for fun, we don't splash the cash to sign sought-after players, and we don't rake in masses of turnover.

Every now and again, fortune smiles on us and we pull together a good coach, some up and coming talent, and a general positive feeling, which sees us near or even achieve promotion. That is our lot.

This board (helped by the generosity of Paul Bristow) have taken significant steps to securing our future as a club. Set against the backdrop of our poor attendances, this is wonderful. The youth setup, Bristow's Bench, the big screen, and now the ambitious consideration of an indestructible playing surface; these are the sorts of things we could only dream of 10 or 15 years ago.

But this isn't good enough for the Playstation generation. They want us to spend money we don't have on players who may well let us down anyway. We splashed out on Billy - how did that go?

Criticise the tactics, criticise the performances. But clamouring for expensive signings and managerial payoffs is naive, and shows you to be someone that doesn't really understand just what TUFC are.

One of the best posts i've read for a long while. It is simple, concise and summarizes perfectly everything about a being a Torquay fan and you have written it in a way i fully understand J5 ( which is bloody hard to do i can tell you! :~D ). I have been a fan for about 7 years and when i first began supporting the Gulls i had zero idea of anything the club did, how much budget they had and the like and it has taken me those 7 years to reach the point i am at now. At the very beginning i thought we could just go out and buy anybody at any time and that we had loads of resources, i was a naive uninitiated Torquay fan.

Through joining this forum a couple of years ago i have learned much about our club from many of you knowledgable folks out there and i have gradually come to accept what we are and what we stand for. If we have no money to sign players nor money to sack managers who are failing then that is to be accepted but the key point you have made is the final bit about criticism.

What we all should be able to do as fans is air our views on team performances, player performances, tactics and selection and whether it is critical or not we should bear in mind our status as a moderately small fish in a big league 2 pond and so long as we aren't in danger of relegation we can be happy with our lot. We can have a pop all we like so long as we remember where we are and what we are trying to achieve with no money for players. It is hard to get any continuity at a club like ours when each year we have to get rid of our best players and replace them with freebies and i certainly haven't been giving Martin or Buckle for that matter much credit for doing so.

Performances have to get a lot better though! :@
