Torquay United v Chesterfield - 19/1/12 - GAME OFF.

Post by AustrianAndyGull »

Torquay will seek to arrest the recent poor run of 6 without a win and 7 without a clean sheet when visitors Chesterfield come to TQ1 on saturday. The latter should be achievable as the Spireites have only scored more than once on 3 occasions away from home and have never notched more than that this so far this season. Gulls boss Martin Ling is becoming increasing frustrated with his side's growing generosity in allowing the opposition to score once the clock ticks past the 80 minute mark and if it happens again on saturday it will be the 7th game in a row and the 10th in total this season, goals from Zebroski for Cheltenham and Zola for Burton respectively costing us the wins in those earlier season games. :'(

Chesterfield ( or 'tahn' as the locals refer to them ) also stopped a mini slump of 3 without victory when comprehensively overcoming an in-form Northampton side at the Proact Stadium last weekend. They lie in 11th place just hovering below the play off zone on 39 points from 28 games and perhaps the most encouraging stat for us Gulls is that they have only scored 11 times on their league travels this season. Torquay have the joint 2nd worse goal return from away games in the league and we have been generally shocking for much of the away campaign thus far so hope springs eternal that a goal MIGHT, i say MIGHT be enough to see off the men from the north midlands.

The Derbyshire club have a change of manager in Paul Cook since we played them last, a pretty cack 1-1 draw at the Proact ( formerly B2Net Stadium ) courtesy of a superb Howe effort, our only chance. The then manager was John Sheridan who as we all know took the reins a few weeks ago down the A38 at Plymouth. He was relieved of his duties after a stuttering start following their relegation from league 1 last term and the board headed by chairman Dave Allen ( not the 80's comedian! ) and chief executive ex Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Turner decided that Paul Cook was the answer.

The former chairman Barrie Hubbard, who left last summer may have stuck with Sheridan as he was a thoroughly decent bloke. I've chatted to him on a few occasions and what he has done for the football club of this small former coal mining town has been commendable and i expect the Spireites fans revere him for all the hard work he has done in overseeing the dark days and steering the club from the decaying shell of the old Saltergate ground and into the new purpose built stadium.

As a side issue i was chatting to the lady in our post office the other day as she clocked my TUFC coat and it got her talking about Aaron Downes as she was a season ticket holder at Chesterfield. She loved Downsey and i know in what high regard he was held in at the club. His missus even ran the club shop too! No doubt Aaron will be looking forward to meeting up with some old friends again down at Plainmoor. Also the bloke in my co-op thinks that Neal Trotman will have our strikers in his pocket. I'd say that was a distinct possibility. I also was in the queue behind Trotman the other week when i was purchasing some sundries and comestibles. Beer and crisps to you and me!
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

All that preview for nothing. :'(

I'll never listen to weather forecasters again, they said Devon and Cornwall a light covering! Anyway, at least we can't concede in the last 10 minutes now.

Gutted that the game is off as if a few other teams below us play and get results they sneak closer and have points on the board worst case scenario.

Due to a waterlogged pitch. Part of me thinks this is down to the Chesterfield team not being able to make it down aswell?

Andy it isn't snowing here at all.

I don't there'll be many (or any) lower league games on tomorrow.

Silver lining is that Rene will be available for Exeter on Sky, I was dreading him getting booked tomorrow. We'll have a few fixtures to catch up now though.

Cheers Nick, it has just started snowing again here and it is due to do so continuously more or less until sunday so i reckon there could have been problems with the Chesterfield team bus getting down today especially as the snow is pretty bad around the midlands south wales, somerset apparently. The team coach would definately have had problems today and also getting back too so you may be right. Well, i'm getting ready to spend the next few days clearing snow from the half mile long drive from my house to the road just so i can get my car out and customers can get in, plus half of it is a hill!! :'(

Yes, but the travelling Chesterfield supporters must also be considered, With the economy in the state that it is in, nobody can afford to spend out on petrol, meals etc. for a wasted journey. Well done to the Torquay staff for getting an early decision made. :-D :-D

One supposes that you live in a stately home which is open to the public. Why don't you get the butler & a couple of the footmen to help you? or is it their day orf?

Don't know what others think, but given the weather overnight and today in the area - cold and dry and all the snow has gone - I really wonder whether this game would still be on if the officials had delayed a decision until this morning. I appreciate it's all about the state of the pitch, but when you consider that the likes of Buckland Athletic (i.e. Newton Abbot) have managed to get their game on today .... just 5 miles away ... and bearing in mind they played on it on Wednesday too, it really beggars belief that we couldn't get our game on.

That said, a decision had to be made, and it's a no win situation because they will get stick for calling off too early (possibly the situation with this game) and you will also get stick (particularly from the away team/fans) if a decision is left too late i.e. close to kick off. I guess the distance/conditions for the travelling team/fans may also have had some influence on the decision too.

I'm pretty sure though that there is no way this game would have been called off 20 or 30 years ago when they seemed to play, whatever the weather!
