Last two games rained off. Phil is right, Sunday is away to Callington. They have a 3G pitch available to them, but I don't know whether they can/do use it for actual games or just friendlies and training. Their game was on last Sunday, so there is some hope that it'll be on.

Anyone know what's happened to the ladies team? It seems they haven't played home or away since December? Not that it's affected the league table, even with everyone having played between two and five games more our girls still sit 5 points clear at the top.

Yeah, not played for 13 weeks now. I got all the way to the ground in Exeter a fortnight ago only for the game to be called off during the warmup.

Meant to write this up earlier.

We came back and beat Plymstock 5-1, having been at 1-1 at one stage. We have a new "number 10" in a girl called Gabby. She's pretty good, and came out of retirement to help us out when her girlfriend (winger Laura Baker) was injured playing for us. She got two of the goals against Plymstock. Goughy took her tally to about a million with one and Crookie got another with yet another 30 yard free kick. Because it was so bloody long ago, I can't remember who got the other goal. We're a bit makeshift at the moment, with a lot of the regulars missing. Left back Adele continues to impress and did extremely well against the very tall, very pacy, very talented Plymstock winger Dionne (apologies if that's spelt incorrectly). First half was disjointed and slow, an obvious sign of the 4 month break for Christmas. The second half was a vast improvement and, in the end, the game was as comfortable as the result suggests.

The recent result against MAP was very disappointing indeed. We dropped our first points of the season in a 1-1 draw, which we earned (perhaps not the right word) with a late, very soft penalty. It was always going to be tough. We were missing a couple of key players, we had a small matchday squad and MAP are second in the table and have played more games since the turn of the year. Had this match been on in a couple of weeks time, with Chambo back from suspension and some practice in the legs, then I think the result would have been different. Sadly though, the winning run came to an end at 13 games as the ladies were largely outplayed. That said, goalkeeper Beth wasn't called into serious action with any great regularity. We suffered the loss of talismanic centre back Randi at half time with a suspected broken foot (suspected by me, since she went for an X-Ray after the game). Add to this the first half loss of Emily who was causing all sorts of problems down the left wing and and we never really looked the same. Emily's replacement Ali, although a decent player in her own right, doesn't have the pace that Em brings and this was a big loss on a windy day where we were having some early joy with the ball over the top or into the channel.

Credit where it's due, this wasn't a bad performance necessarily, just a combination of factors all coming together to see us drop points. We did have a clear goal ruled out as having not crossed the line (it did, by about 18 inches) and we did fail to score with a couple of decent half chances which ordinarily we do seem to snaffle home. Goughy was a whisker away from connecting with a couple of good through balls which the keeper just beat her to and, what was lacking in match sharpness was replaced with plenty of effort and tackling (we probably conceded as many free kicks on Sunday as we have the rest of the season combined).

MAP's goal, when it arrived, had been coming for some time. They were having a lot of the ball, but were being frustrated by the good work of Vicky, Crookie and Sarah Chase in the midfield. Annoyingly, for all their possession, their goal came on the break, with the ball being played through the middle to the right have side of the penalty area, where a striker was there to hammer a shot high into the net past Beth who was a mere spectator.

From there, Torquay picked up and managed to retain possession slightly better than they had beforehand. Goughy got herself on the ball more and started causing problems out wide (she always seems to drift wide in search of the ball if things aren't going her way, a bit like when Rooney drops deep for England, and it's surprisingly effective). Her skill and pace always cause havoc for defenders and Sunday was no exception. She neatly beat a couple of people a couple of times, but always managed to find a third well drilled MAP defender on hand. At last the goal came and it was a bit contentious. Crookie got to the byeline and tried to knock a ball over, it was blocked and, as she took a second bite at the cherry from just outside the box, the ball stuck the hand of a defender just inside the box. The MAP girl did undoubtedly handle, but the ball was fired at her from very close range. Regardless, the referee (who we've had plenty this season and has always been excellent. Y4L will know his name) gave it and it was the girl with the sledgehammer foot who had won the spot kick in the first place who stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way and calmly roll the ball into the net.

There wasn't long left by now, but what remained was competitive, even stuff, with Torquay defending well at one end and attacking with purpose at the other. Alas, neither side could force a winner and it was honours even after an entertaining, if party-pooping 90 minutes.

I suspect MAP, knowing that they had to win to stand any chance of stealing the league title, had prepared thoroughly for this game. Although they are definitely a side with a lot of quality, I think they definitely raised their game against us and took advantage of the situation as it existed (it would be criminal if they hadn't). Torquay will win the division with two more wins. They seek the first of those two at home (Ipplepen FC) to Alphington this Sunday at 1400. It's sure to be another tough game, but if we have Randi back fit and Emily can get over the cramp she seemed to suffer, then I'm highly confident of a win which could be enough if other results go our way.

They play Alphington LFC away today. 2pm kick off and the Ladies just need a point to see them as league champions (promotion).

CONGRATULATIONS to the Ladies Team !!! They won 0-4. The whole game was played in the pouring rain. It was still an enjoyable game to watch and Torquay were deserved winners.
