Tony 'Bomber' Brown

Post by hector »

Mentioned on MOTD this evening, and it is 50 years ago that he made his WBA debut. Makes me feel old to think I watched the end of his career at Torquay and he was still top scorer in his first season with us.

I remember his eleven goals that season as well.

As we are of the same generation we have both seen what is currently happening at TQ1 on the pitch many times before. Have you learned nothing over the years Mr B ? or do you just enjoy trying to wind people up ? Just think about it for a moment. We have a ground to be proud of. A club structure with a youth policy that will surely pay dividends IN THE LONG TERM. The club is investing in a training ground something that it has never had before.
A football club such as ours is a continual work in progress and as such instant results such as we would all like to see are not always possible.

Do you not think that the club has made genuine progress ?

Cast your mind back a few years and think what it was like .....Just look at You Tube if you want a reminder !

We try to get by on gates of 2500 while our neighbours had an attendance of 6180 today and our Grecian friends average 4000. As a school teacher do the feckin maths !!!

Do you lose the use of your brain cells during the weekend ???

Not sure what you are on about. This was a post about Tony Brown. What in my post about Tony Brown warrants this? And what sad pathetic soul gets so wound up about postings on a forum that they hijack a thread for a personal attack on a stranger? Is expressing disquiet about the manager really worth abuse like this? I haven't criticised the club at all. Check your facts before you post nonsense like this. And in future send it as a pm.

Still remember the Tony Brown testimonial v Man U, in 1981. 4-2 to the Torquay boys (HT 4-0). Utd team included Robson,Wilkins, Buchan,McIroy,Stapleton, etc, managed by Ron Atkinson. We had Rioch in our team as well as Brown and ripped into the Mancs from the kick-off(much to their surprise and disgust !).Full house I remember(about 7,500 then) with loads of so-called Utd "fans" who were probably seeing them for the first time.
Oh how we mocked! :)

I remember this.

Probably a shame for him that his testimonial, essentially for his service to WBA, was transferred to Torquay.

I remember a Junior Section Meeting a couple of days ahead of the game and Ron Atkinson came along. He walked in like he was the Messiah, jewellery blazing but at least he came along. I don't suppose the equivalent manager would do the same now.
