Presumably the board employed Ling for some good reason, perhaps one being that he knew what he was doing or perhpas that he convinced them he could bring some decent players in.
i happen to think that Zebroski and Stanley are excellent players - however one has gone and the other appears to be on his way out.
As far as Mcphee is concerned I am quite happy to believe the evidence of my own eyes and that he is a terribly limited footballer. Granted he has scored goals at non league level but he is 28 now and presumably hasn't made it at League level for a reason ie he isn't good enough.
Even more worrying are the managers comments that he doesn't know where to play him.
As for the Newcastle lad - well i havn't seen him but my worry would be that he has not even been on loan at a league club, which might well tell a story ie no league club actually wanted him. Too inexperienced to be anything other than squad fodder at the moment.
Oastler and Stevens - not impressed by either, neither up to regular league 2 standard.
So I am not impressed with anything Ling has done so far.
If has been muted our next signing is Saah - my question is the same if he is so good why is he at a non league club and as he is available he doesn't seem to have loads of league clubs after him. Given that he is a "managers favourite" I guess he will be a first choice - that means that Robbo or Ellis is going to have to make way and they are two of his better players.
I would say that we have the following players who are capable of holding down a regular first team place.

Ellis
Robertson
Mansell
Nicholson
O'Kane
Zebroski (in the unlikely event that he stays)

So realistically thats only five playes on the books that are good enough to play regular league 2 football. Kee has ability but is far too fat so I have not included him.
Ling just has to add some quality and hasn't done that so far.
Everyone should take a reality check and realise that we could be in alot of trouble this year.

Agree Brucie, Ling has done nowt so far although i do disagree with your opinion on Saah. Branston was in the conference with Kettering and look at what he did for us so Saah, although a non league player who hasn't pulled up any trees could do a job for us and i wouldn't dismiss it if he signed, McPhee on the other hand is just not up to league football as isn't Stevens. Oastler has promise though.

Re: Thanks For Applying

Hey i hold my hands up and humbly apologise if this is the case TUFC92 but onthe O/S Baker was quoted as saying we can't possibly reply to every applicant or words to that effect. So that is the info i have to go on. It doesn't say the board sent out letters to every applicant even if unsuccessful. It says what it says. That to me on face value devalues Mr Baker as a human being.

Currently our wingers are Stevens, Halpin, Macklin and Parkinson. Our strikers are Kee and McPhee. With 2 players for each position that means we're going to bring in a maximum of two more attacking players. Looking at those players, you have to be realistic and say it's going to be a long, hard season. Kee's partner is going to have to be superman, and who are we going to attract here during pre-season that isn't already fixed up?

I don't like being negative, but lose Zebroski and I thing we're going to struggle.
great post gulliball. at the moment the squad is pretty uninspiring as are the signings, in my opinion. Kee works hard and McPhee is poor, in my opinion so we lack goals. I think our defence is quite solid with the addition of another C/H and Eunan in midfield we have something to add to but if zebs goes then we could be in for a long season.

Re: Thanks For Applying

Sorry Fonda but this scenario has happened to me on numerous occasions and although you get used to it after a bit it makes your blood boil to think you have been treated with such disdain and indifference. For what might be unimportant to one person might be the opposite to another, so i wish Mr Baker would appreciate this.

Re: aah int we nice, ay?

I've got to admit to swearing a bit at O/T and getting a bit aggressive but nothing that is overstepping the mark. That is one thing that impresses me about Torquay, the behaviour of the fans. If memory serves me right i believe we have had only 1 football arrest/ banning order since 2006. Don't worry, it wasn't me!

Re: Thanks For Applying

Baker you are a lazy bastard and don't deserve to be in the position you're in. You are a disgrace. I have been in the situation of applying for jobs left right and centre and even attending interviews and getting no response and believe me it does nothing for self confidence. It just highlights the lack of disregard in which you hold people. Common human respect and decency would tell you that if an individual can be bothered to research your organisation, submit an application, prepare for interview, attend the interview whether it be travelling from Newton Abbot or Hull, and all that entails then YOU SHOULD BE BOTHERED ENOUGH TO RESPOND TO THEM INDIVIDUALLY YOU LAZY, ARROGANT ****!!

Re: Confirmed League 2 Transfers

Interesting to see Rankine has gone to Aldershot. I've seen a bit of him at Bootham Crescent ( refuse to call it KitKat Crescent) and he looks a good player. Surely we should be competing for players like this with the likes of Aldershot? I don't know what their playing budget is but it can't be much more than ours surely? I would have been over the moon for Rankine to have rocked up at Plainmoor.

Re: Successful Season?

It is not wise to comment until we have our squad assembled prior to the season kick off but comment i will anyway! I believe that if M/L gets us within 10 points of a play off spot i would consider it a successful season. Yes i am optimistic and i still await news of players coming in but in losing Bevan, Stanley and Branno who not only were the spine of team but they were there to communicate and get the rest of the players organised. I feel we need another Branston type player to come in in order to add a bit of steel as it is not quite there anymore. Goalscoring will be a problem and i anticipate the arrival of a couple of strikers. All in all a mid table finish for me pretty much regardless of who we bring in, unless Messi wants to swap Catalonia for Torbay?!

Intresting to see in our first season in the BSP we averaged 3125 fans but this season we averaged 2631.
I know due to the credit crunch and all that has played a big part but will be intresting to see if the amout of people this season drops or does make an increase.
When we were promoted to league 1 playing the likes of Sheff Weds and Barnsley our home attendances were hardly inspiring were they. If we played Man U at Plainmoor we probably wouldn't sell out as is the apathy in the bay. I found the league 1 stats quite amazing.

Re: category a and b

Comments taken on board Nickgull but i had no idea that costs for policing, extra staff etc for more higher profile games are passed onto the consumer, in this case the Torquay fan. I find this secenario utterly disgraceful. Aren't we penalised enough as fans? I pay a set amount to watch mediocre league 2 teams. I do not expect to pay more just because demand for tickets is higher.

Chippygull, Happytorq, just let it go. You can't spend all your waking hours being eaten up inside by hatred for Crawley and their fat **** of a cheating **** manager! We all know that they are a load of crooks! However, in my opinion to even have categories of games, ie certain games that cost more than others IN LEAGUE 2 is nothing short of a disgrace. At this level all games should be a uniform price end of. Robbing twats. I'm talking about Torquay now and not Crawley! :red:

Re: Mustapha Carayol

Unbelievable!! As on the Benners thread, i agree with Ferrari again.Carayol, every time i saw him was shit. Tomlin had many games when he too was shit including the play off fianl but equally as many when he was immense like the away leg at Shrewsbury. I'd deffo rather have Tomlin than Carayol any day of the week.

Re: Well we wont see Benners in League 2 next season ...

Agree with Ferrari on most points. Benners scoring record stands up at L2 level but he is a poor all round footballer. Not strong, not good in the air and not particularly quick either. A lot of his goals were either a scuffed shot after getting half a yard on a defender or tap ins. That said i'm not decrying the job he did for us, he was very effective but i am surprised he went to a club as 'big' as Swindon. I can only think that they just looked at stats when buying Benners and not really studied performance. Benyon certainly wasn't given any sort of chance to show what he could do. I do believe that he will be effective at Wycombe and i would be happy to even see him back here at Plainmoor.
