Hemel Hempstead Town v Torquay United, 23rd September 2023
Just back from the game. How did we lose when we were 2-1 up with 10 mins to play ? Simple; bad defending. Good teams start with a good defence; ours is very weak. All 3 of Hemel's goals should have been cut out. Our attack was also fairly toothless today, with both Jarvis and Ash well marked and repeatedly muscled off the ball by a team that were energetic and never gave up. Stobbs badly missed; Lapslie too far forward; McGavin too slow; Halstead not his usual dominant self; subs had zero positive impact ; whole team, apart from Moxey, gave the ball away continuosly. (Note their goals 2 and 3 scored after Moxey went off.) We may not even make the play offs unless we sign at least 1 good CB and a rt back. Finally "De Silva has an attitude problem" - why sign him then, given that he was here for a lengthy spell last year so this should have been clear. The money should have gone on the defence ! The problems are so obvious and so long standing It makes it criminal they haven't been addressed.

Aveley F C vs Torquay United Sat 2 Sept KO 3pm
One of our worst ever days, getting well beaten by a village team with average attendance well below 1000. But note that they are second in the table now ! This league is so poor its embarassing that we are not shining.

Pitted against a part time, lowly, relagation possibility team. Completely outplayed, dire unimaginitive performance. Go 1 -0 down. Rally a bit in 2nd half, equalise, get late winner. Pick up more injuries. Anyone seeing a pattern here ???

Bit before my time - started coming regularly in 1965. But I do remember attending Geoff Cox's testamonial game. Torquay spent most of the game trying to set him up for a goal- and failing to do so !

If Jarvis is back we should win this, assuming the team isn't crippled by other injuries. if so , we should be in the play off places.

St Albans City v Torquay United - 19th August 3pm
Good result, especially with all the injuries and absences. Up to 10th, and only outside the play off positions on GD. But the thinness of the squad is a worry, and we picked up 4 yellow cards, which doesn't help. Reinforcements needed!

Some relief I guess. However we are still 15th, 5 points behind the leaders Worthing. And with a GD of -2. Early days, but lots of work to do.

I dread to think what sort of a team we can put out if some of these injuries don't clear up. Hoping they do, and we see a reaction.

There seems to be almost universal agreement that we need an experienced CB and more forward cover. Johnson must see this too. So either there is no budget; he is waiting for Moxey, Martin and Dawson to be fit (risky if this is going to take some time), which will bring more options to the squad; or he has it in hand (ie waiting for right availability). I hope for some good news soon, but a nagging fear is how long it took to bring in good players last season. If we had recruited Stobbs ,Collins, Lawrence and Nouble even 2/3 weeks earlier than we did we would have stayed up.

Too early to panic, but a disappointing result in all the circumstances. I hope we can still strengthen the defense with an experienced CB, or promising loan. I hope Moxey and Martin will soon be fit enough to play 90 mins; that would in itself help, and might allow Donellan to play as a defensive midfielder. He gave away a lot of goals last year when playing at the back.

Good signing, will be a threat to NLS defences. Needs to cross better, but excellent dribbler and scores goals. Plus more cover in forward line. Don't play at wing back !

I agree these are the priority. I never suggested we sign any more midfielders - was just pointing to a potential issue.
