January transfer targets
And where are we going to find an experienced proven goalscorer who is unemployed at this stage of the season? As if anyone is just hanging around waiting for us to sign him up. All such proven goalscorers are all gainfully and fully employed, and have been all season. Get real.

That's all that people are interested in these days - the way you look, especially women. Never mind what you do, or what kind of person you are. As long as you look good, that's the most important.

FACR1 Replay - Derby County Torquay Utd Mon 14/11/22
Last night, as on Saturday, we were shown that if you shoot from the edge of the penalty area, or thereabouts, you score. Trouble is we don't seem to have anyone who can shoot, and more importantly, keep the ball DOWN.
Also, as on Saturday, our defence is caught square so often. We need to keep our defenders aware, when we're attacking, that we need to get well behind the ball in case of a breakaway by the opposition.

FACR1 - Torquay Utd v Derby County Sun 06/11/22
Conditions were very difficult, and with the heavy pitch, it was an energy sapping game. To keep going in those conditions,
,to be 2 nil down, and be the better team at the end, AND to score in the last seconds, more than proved that the Torquay players are fit, both mentally and physically. Bodes well for the rest of the season. As long as we can keep clear of more injuries.

Notts County v Torquay United Sat 29 Oct KO 3pm
Getting back to Saturday's game which is what this particular topic is supposed to be, 0-4 is obviously not a good score against, but many Torquay fans predicted a higher score than that for this match. Note that Notts County, in eighty eight minutes of open play, only scored once. It wasn't until our two experienced defenders were substituted did they score the last two. Also note that all of their three goals from open play were long shots, from roughly the edge of the penalty area. Shame we don't shoot more often when in good positions.

Exactly Desperado, but the fans expect us to be top of the league from Day One. Not realistic in the circumstances

FC Halifax Town v Torquay United Sat 13 August KO3pm
I wasn't at the match yesterday, but reading all the reports and listening to the commentary, and the comments of the Halifax manager, it was obvious that we were outplayed ie. pinned in our own half for most of the match. The only reasons we didn't lose 4-0 was because of Halifax's woeful finishing and an outstanding display by Halstead - he was obviously man of the match as far as Torquay was concerned.
Against Oldham, again it was only their poor finishing and Halstead's form which prevented a defeat. I fear against a team who can finish, we are in for a sound beating at the moment. We are giving the opposition too much opportunity to create chances in front of goal. Perhaps, like last season, this team will require some time to 'bed in' before they are able to understand each other's play, and what GJ wants from them. Too much team swapping around, for any 'bedding in' to occur. Clearly, we are not going to crush all before us, and head the table. We are all going to have to be patient in the meantime.

TUFC v Eastleigh Monday 18th April 3pm KO.
Does anyone know why the pitch is sprayed so much before kickoff and at halftime? The water does not soak into the soil on these hard surfaces, and the players have difficulty keeping their feet. Is this done on GJ's orders to 'help' our play, or is it done at the whim of the groundsman to help maintain a good surface and encourage grass growth. It certainly doesn't, in my opinion, make for better football. Torquay used to play well on the harder pitches that we used to get towards the end of the season.

Perhaps that game will put an end to all the stupid criticism of Little. What a difference he makes to this team, and his goals yesterday were class. Johnson has now got these players playing as he wants them to, and it would be good if most of them can be kept together for next season, with one or two additions perhaps. We have been improving game on game, and the remaining games of this season will tell if the improvements are real. The players also look a lot fitter, which is borne out by all the running they do. Notts County manager said in his post match interview that Torquay had the runners. (which they didn't). On their fans forum page one of their fans said he wanted NC to sign Lemonhaigh Evans last summer. I hope they don't do that this summer. We need to keep these players together now. I'm sure they will make a good impression on this league next season.

Defense
On Saturday, if we had scored from all the chances we created, it wouldn't have mattered too much if the defence had let in a couple, as long as we had scored four or five, and therefore won the game. Our players, all of them, need to know the technique of how to hit the ball hard and low. These chances often fall to midfield or even back four players like Wynter. If the Wollens advertising hoarding at the Babbacombe end had been the target, then we would have scored four in the first half. This pattern is repeated in most games that we see at Plainmoor.

We need the whole team to be capable of scoring goals. That is what happened last season - we weren't reliant on one player upfront to do all the scoring. Goals came from throughout the side, and that's why we were successful last season, even the goalkeeper scored on one occasion! It's unrealistic at this level to expect to have a centre forward who's going to score all your goals. We're not going to find one / afford one anyway. Most defences in this league can snuff out the effect of one centre forward, as indeed we see at Plainmoor every week. There were enough chances yesterday, from players other than the centre forward, who had chances to score. Too many shots from well placed positions ended up well over the bar. We should have had about five goals from non centre forward players.
