Gary Johnson, stick or twist?

There’s still a lot of football to be played, depending on who would be interested in the job really decides whether to get rid or not for me. With the situation we’re in I would assume behind the scenes other managers who aren’t tied up have been asked the question and seeing as we still have Johnson they haven’t been interested.

On the plus side, it wouldn’t be unlike a Johnson side to suddenly go on a winning streak and we climb the table but I’m afraid we just too used to losing at the moment. Yeovil away I think we should have won that game and we’ve left with a 2-0 loss, I don’t know how much longer this can go on for but if no viable options are available then we’re better off sticking and fingers crossed we can turn some of these ‘better performances’ into wins.

As for my vote I voted to go, but if him going means it’s just downes who steps up or ASA is given the job then I’d rather we stick.

Olaf Koszela

DevonBee wrote: 24 Oct 2022, 19:08 Koszela is a weird one, he bulked himself up for pre-season. I thought he had a chance this season, and then he is loaned out ?
It is of no benefit to us loaning him out, if come May he will be allowed out of the door.....I am sure he will not be alone .
Embarrassing to have only 4 on the bench, are we not able to call him back as a benchman. Or is that not allowed ? :-/

On another note Alex Moyse who looked good pre-season in the games I watched is as good as 3 of our current squad midfielders , we know who they are . :}
Have to agree with you, from what I’ve seen of Alex he’s got the ability.

Olaf however, has proven time and time again he is not upto the standard. I would love for him to become a great player for us but from what I’ve seen, even in friendlies, he really isn’t good enough and how he managed to get another contract I really don’t know.

A Review of or Squad after 14 League Games.

I think the management deserve the criticism they’re getting, I think our injuries haven’t helped the situation but after the last few seasons we should of been aware of this. I would rather focus on the positives so far and in Jarvis we have a very good target man. Mcgavin is a good footballer who looks shot of confidence and I also think wyatt has proven to be a decent player.
I feel bad for andrews, he scored a good amount for aldershot last year and has played all season injured until it’s got too bad and now he needs surgery.
I think we’ve put together an OK squad, a mix of good and bad ability with some very high potential, but we’ve seriously shot ourselves in the foot by not signing up any wingers. This is not the worst squad we’ve had, but a lot of things aren’t working and now the confidence has been shot in players it’s going to be very hard to turn that around.

Torquay v Altrincham Sat 22/10/22 5.20pm

Well what a game that was! I think the first half was as bad as we’ve been all season and at half time we really should of been 4-0 down, but for most of the second half we were on the front foot and it wasn’t until we got into the lead did we go back to our old ways of conceding the softest goals.
On contrary to some other posts on here, there were definitely a lot of positives to take from that game, but the same issues are still plain to see. Glad to see the back of the 352 and hopefully it doesn’t come back, we played a 451 but because of evans and de silva(our only wingers both absent) we had a central midfielder and a striker on either wing, at times we had nothing down the left side as Goodwin kept drifting inside, serious lack of pace in the side and Alty didn’t really need to try very hard to create good chances.
Think Crowe deserved that goal, and hopefully this can be a turning point for him personally. He definitely looked a lot more comfortable in a back 4 and at times shown some quality on the ball. Mcgavin has clearly got some ability, but again without pace and players out wide, he’s got very few options when he does get the ball. Jarvis is another positive, holds the ball up and links up very well.
25-30 minutes we looked a very good side, but we still managed to concede 2 on the back end of that. We need wyatt/Martin to be back ASAP, we need mox in the centre of the back 4, and we desperately need some pace on the wings. Why oh why did we not sign Ashley Nathaniel George at the start of the season I don’t know, he wouldn’t be our saviour but he’d offer a damn sight lot more than Goodwin/Donnellan can on the wings.
A last minute equaliser in a game like that feels like a win, but it’s still only 1 point. I really hope this could be the turn of our season cause there is a good group of players there but we need to a lot better for 90 minutes.

Torquay v Maidenhead - Tue 04/10

An odd game, one that we needed to win, we should have won and we’ve left without even a draw. Firstly I will say I refuse to accept that we have the worst squad in this league, individually a lot of these players show their qualities in glimpses but again we are lining up in a 352, relying on Martin and Wyatt for our wide attacking threat, it just baffles me. McGavin came on and is clearly a very good footballer, thought Jarvis had a great game too but the team as a whole is so disjointed. Someone else has said lapslie put all the effort in with nothing to show for it, spot on. We know he’s a very good player but he looked lost today and when he did have the ball, there’s no options to play too purely because of how we have lined up. This all leads back to GJ and unfortunately his stubbornness will either see him sacked or us relegated.

Some may not like it, but enough really is enough. Thankyou for everything Johnson, we were on our way to the western league before you, but if we don’t act soon we will be back where we started with you.

Southend v Torquay Sat 03/09/22

Watching the highlights it looks like we played a 442, i know Hanson got the goal but I would like to see lapslie and mcgavin be the 2cms if we are to continue as we do miss his bite, some good football played there but defensive substitutions nearly let Southend get back in the game. Lovett looks a great 2nd choice, Omar looked solid in the highlights and it was good to see evans in the middle of a lot of the good stuff. Andrews got himself a couple chances but he’s clearly quite rusty, hopefully Jarvis is ready to start with Goodwin and maybe we should be in the market for another winger as it seems Dan Martin was deployed there after wyatt, who are both more defensive minded.
1 thing for sure, this team will keep improving.

brucie wrote: 20 Aug 2022, 22:56 Courtier Gull - Crowe looked twice as good as Wynter - wow, forgive me if I dont take what you say seriously. i'll reproduce messages across 3 forums which have been universally critical of Crowes performances so far. "Doesn't know which way is up" "no pace", "not up to it" the radio devon commentators were also saying the same thing at Bromley.

So the consensus is that he's a weak link I guess - thats not me thats what everyone else is saying.
I know it gets hard at your age to read and comprehend most things but if you slowed down for a minute you’d see I was comparing crowes start with us too Wynters START with us, and there isn’t even a comparison. We were the league below and up until Christmas wynter couldn’t pass couldn’t attack couldn’t defend, now we have Crowe playing on the wing all by himself and yes he looks physically weak but he does make plenty of challenges, he’s playing 2v1 most of the time, if anyone in the defence as a whole has been a disappointment, especially yesterday then it’s Ali Omar who was getting bullied all day. With Crowe there’s clearly a bloody good footballer there, one that will go further than Wynter will go in the football pyramid.

The same Ben wynter who was absolutely shocking in his first 6 months here, in the league below. If you want to compare the 2, Crowe is 3 years younger and in his few games has looked twice as good as wynters first few games for us… if you want to start to write off Crowe already then do that, but it’s like the Cameron/Little/Halstead sagas all over again.

Of course he didn’t go, why even ask?

Not even worth replying too, I’ve never liked Nathan Ashmore but he’s pulled off some absolute worldie saves today, for 35 mins of the second half we had them pegged back. Lapslies missed 2 sitters, Omars nearly scored twice, andrews turned his man twice and 2 great saves again from Ashmore. I was hopeful of a better performance today and I got that, unfortunately we didn’t finish. How we never had a penalty when Goodwin was pulled to the floor through on goal I have no idea, the same sort of foul Marshall was sent off for. Most real fans will be proud of the lads today and we created many more opportunities than they did.

Hopeful of a better performance today, we need to create more chances. It will be interesting to see if we carry on with this 532 formation as we just don’t have enough forward to make much happen. COYY

Bromley v Torquay United - Tuesday 16th August 2022

brucie wrote: 16 Aug 2022, 22:47 Why do you think Nathaniel-George is going to start. He's disappeared already. by the looks of things.

Is it possible to guage how Tomlinson played? he came on at 0-0 and we conceded the winner when he was on the pitch. It seemed from the commentary that Bromley then missed several chances with our marking almost non existent, and ended up with Mcgavin berating him and Omar for their marking. I'm not blaming him but he isnt this standard. Playing both him and Omar will land us in deep shit.

Our subs bench was shocking tonight. Hall (past his sell by date) Evans (taken off at half time in his first game cause he wasn't good enough) Tomlinson (Southern League Standard) Iseguan (no experience). If you really think that Tomlinson will get picked ahead of Marshall when they are both fit then you probably need to go and see somebody.
You’ve been posting crap for years I think you need to go see someone… those pills don’t seem to be working, I bet your misses loves being around you

Bromley v Torquay United - Tuesday 16th August 2022

And the doom and gloom starts!! First 15-20 Bromley sounded like they had a lot of chances but after that so did we… disallowed goal and a couple great saves from their keeper. I do think that the current formation isn’t suiting us as teams seem to counter us quite easily, but having the 2 main strikers the teams been built around out injured aren’t going to help anything going forward.

This time last season we were in a much worse position, guessing Brucie didn’t listen to the game, Tomlinson got stuck in and may just keep Marshall out the side after today. Would like to see evans and this Ashley George start and give us some width, but we’re definitely in a better position than last season and we are only going to get better.
