I actually think the loan system is a very good system indeed.

Firstly, from the perspective of the player, it means that they can get regular first team football without being unemployed. No player will join a club wanting to have no chance of playing in the first team, so if they do drop down the pile, it allows them to play regularly whilst basically having a trial at a new club where you get paid for it.

Secondly, from the perspective of the 'selling' club. It reduces wage bills, gives youngsters a chance to gain first team experience without making the mistakes in your own first team and allows unwanted players to find a new club.

Thirdly, from the perspective of the 'buying' club. It means a team can easily plug a hole where an injury has occurred, improve areas of the team where it is lacking whilst not having to pay transfer fees, signing on fees and various other costs.

I think many of us seem to be getting a little hypocritical here. Where BR have a large amount of players injured, they get a few loanees in and they 'cheat' their way up the table, yet we spend ages bemoaning the lack of loan signings covering players getting injured, such as Morris and Poke most recently. We can't have it both ways...

Not exactly "vastly superior clubs" and if you look at our squad at Southend on Saturday.
Mildenhall - Millwall Loan Discussing terms for next season
Smith - Ours
McDonald - Port Vale Loan
McCrystal - Ours
Lee Brown - Ours
Tom Hitchcock - Youth Loan QPR-Made his league Debut for us.
Norburn - Ours
Parkes - Ours
Broghammer - Ours
Brunt - Ours
Tounkara - Ours
Subs
Gough - Ours
Patterson - Ours
Richards -Ours
Anyinsah - Ours
Harding - Our Youth team
Ollie Clark - our Youth team
Tom Lockyer - Our youth team
Injured: Gill, Virgo, Clucas, Kenneth, Clarkson, Harrold, Bevan, Harrison,
Hardly a team of stars but sensibly Managed. John Jo O'Toole is the only player to have gone back and that to Colchester who are not exactly flying and he can't get in their team!!!
Surely the Loan System is a two way thing in that it gives players games who otherwise would not get games. They are generally not going to be world beaters even in this lowly division. Our turnaround has mainly been down to too many under performing players under McGhee and good Management.
As we all know you can get loans in and they can be awful, irrespective of the division they have come from.

To conclude I do totally disagree with Loan players being used for season long loans and believe that it should only be Short term emergency loans up until say October/November. I then feel the loan system should open and NOT close until say end of February and then return to emergency loan.
IMO it is a very important system due to the number of "foreign players" allowed in our game and the fact that the rules are totally biased towards the Premier/Championship Clubs in ALL ways over the way they can accrue young players even though they have no intention of ever playing them.

I don't think it's just money that's the problem. I think players turn us down based on other, more personal factors like the town itself and it's location. That would put a lot of people off.

Also, someone mentioned Buckle eariler. I think the way Buckle used loan players was at times borderline irresponsible. Yes, he brought in some players during his time here who were just what we needed for the situations we were in and improved the squad. But there were too many of them, and too great a reliance on players that weren't ours. What if we'd have gone up to League One when we went to OT? The majority were long term loans that had settled into the squad and become a part of the way we were playing. Half our team would have returned to their parent clubs and we'd have been facing a struggle before a ball had been kicked. Particularly if he had have left for Rovers anyway and taken the players he took with him.

I do think the loan system is important though. I'd have liked to have seen Mr Ling dip into it earlier on in the season.

Yeah FFP, that's definitely a sound system...

I'm sure you've had plenty of players out and it's terribly sad, but that doesn't alter the fact that you've got in on loan a whole host of players from vastly superior clubs. It makes a mockery of the division system, might as well make it a 92 club free-for-all.
We supplemented the talent we had with loanees and I disagreed with it even then.

You were bottom (deservedly, you won what, 2 games?) at Christmas, you get a load of loanees in and you start picking up points. It's not coincidence.

You're being terribly nice, and I'm sure I mean no malice to Rovers specifically (I could, just as easily, pick on Plymouth, but I went with Rovers.)

Matt.

Sorry but don't see what you mean. If I remember under Paul Buckle you RELIED on loan players to get you near the top. Stanley, Robinson, Tomlin to name three. As I said before we had 11 players out inured at one stage just before Christmas and all of those injured would have expected to be in the team if fit. We could have actually named a full team of injured players that could have expected to be in the top 10 this season. We now hope to sign for next season most of the players we have had on loan if not all of them so surely that is the correct way to use the system.
I can't see the money has anything to do with it as we are all having to work within FPP therefore this limits the money the richer teams can use. It will be interesting to see how you do in your three games as neither us or Morecombe have anything to play for but as I see it you HAVE to beat Barnet tomorrow night and I hope you do.
With a bit of luck there will be nothing on our game and we can both have a relaxed Saturday and enjoy the day.

You were frigging dreadful by every account I have read. Your lot were creaming themselves over your performance against us and even then you threw away a 2 goal lead against 10 men and relied on, surprise surprise, a loanee to dig you out of the shit yet again.

We wouldn't have got in dozens of loanees because we haven't got the money.

The loan system, as it stands, is far too liberal. Teams may have one loanee, two if one is an emergency keeper. Plymouth, Rovers and Watford are all teams taking the piss with the loan system this year and it's plainly not in the spirit of the game.

Matt.
