This is the only golf event I ever bother watching. The game bores me to death under normal circumstances but this brings out the patriot in me, or maybe it's the chance to stuff the Americans on equal terms.

I have an inkling Colin Montgomerie will prove a very good choice as captain.

Come on Europe !!

Rory McIroy & Graeme McDowell 1DN - 1UP Stewart Cink & Matt Kuchar

Padraig Harrington & Luke Donald 1DN - 1UP Bubba Watson & Jeff Overton

Ian Poulter & Ross Fisher A/S - A/S Tiger Woods & Stricker

Lee Westwood & Martin Kaymer 1UP - 1DN Phil Mickelson & Dustin Johnson

Only played up to the 12th hole after the very heavy rain. The good thing is that the new schedule means they will finish on Sunday (weather permitted.) Session 2 will now have 6 foursome matches. 3rd two foursomes and four fourballs and 4th the singles.

Lets hope the weather holds up!

I have to agree with SG. The Ryder cup rocks.

Great entertainment in a gladiatorial atmosphere.

Better than the World Cup...

And we are up in all 6 games that are in progress.

Honestly, woo and indeed hoo, etc etc, but I don't really see the point of the Ryder Cup. It's not a team game - 51 and a half weeks of the year these guys want to beat each other. And I don't really consider myself European anyway....if it was still just GB and NI maybe i'd be more into it, I dunno. I just think that a lot of the time people just want to 'spank the yanks' rather than have any 'euro pride'.

I actually played golf this weekend - 36 holes, magic stuff. And I wasn't crap, which is A Good Thing.

It's the best team competition in the world! There is players in either TEAM that play eachother, The first TEAM to get to 14 1/2, which usually means the best TEAM wins. The players want to beat eachother to win for themselves in the tour as there not in a TEAM, they also want to beat eachother to get in the TEAM. It isn't GB & NI because the bloody Yanks always used to batter us. It's a more competitive competition if it is Europe. The Ryder Cup is becoming the best sporting tournement in the world. Saying you don't see the point of the Ryder Cup is a joke!

Rant Over!

Blimey, that was easy ;-)

I'm just saying that in my experience, for a lot of fans (particularly non-golfers), the Ryder Cup is less about 'winning it for Europe'* than it is about 'pulling one over the Americans'. Maybe it's a function of me being somewhat of a Eurosceptic, politically speaking, but I'll always consider myself english (or at a push, British) rather than 'European'. It was all very dramatic, yes, yes, very impressive, but golf is not a team game in the same way as football, rugby or hockey is, in that in those sports, if your team-mates are lacking, the chances are you'll not do very well (unless you're Maradona, obviously).

With the Ryder Cup, it is the individual performances that are going to be remembered more than the 'team' performance. People remember Justin Leonard's mile-long putt at Brookline, or Harrington earning the winning point, or McDowell today (probably). I don't even think it means as much to a lot of the european golfers as it used to (or indeed, as much as it used to mean to GB&NI golfers), which is evidenced by the reluctance of players like Paul Casey and Justin Rose to leave the more lucrative PGA Tour in order to play in europe and get Ryder Cup points.
